Q: Don't see setup screen for Apple TV 3rd Gen

I have Apple TV 3rd gen equipment (given to me) and want to start using it. When I connect it to the TV, I don't get a setup screen - the screen shows "no input." How do I get things started? Do I need an Apple TV account first?

What tv are you using (brand, model #)

Make sure you're using the TVs remote to navigate to the proper input

Try a different HDMI cable and port

    Test on a different tv

I'm using a Toshiba TV. Apple TV was working on this TV when my nephew lived with us, so I know it works with this TV, HDMI cable, etc.. He left and gave us the gear. Do I need an Apple TV account? Do I need to turn on the Apple TV box with the remote? Nothing happens when I press the buttons on the remote, so I'm wondering if the battery may be dead.

    What is the model #

It's best to try a different cable and port and to test on another tv to verify, even if it was working before

If it was disconnected then it will automatically turn on when it's plugged back in and connected to TV, do you see the white light on the Apple TV?

I put a new battery in the remote, but I still get nothing when I switch the TV input to HDMI2. The light on the Apple TV device is on. The TV is a Toshiba model 24L4200U. I don't have another HDMI-enabled TV to test this with. Can I plug it into a computer monitor to test it, or does it have to be a TV?

You do not need an account to get started.

If the ATV light is on steady, it should be putting out a video signal.

If you hit a button on the remote, the light on the ATV should blink once.

If it is not properly paired with the ATV, the light will blink 3 times rapidly.

With the HDMI cable connected to 1 or 2 on the back of the set, you should be able to cycle through the various inputs using the Input button on the TV remote.

Let me know how your ATV light reacts to the remote.

The ATV didn't respond to anything I did with the remote. I went to the Apple Support information you linked to, and followed the suggestion to power the ATV off and on again. That did the trick! (I should have thought to do that on my own.) It's working now. Thanks for the help!
