Q: frequent and uncommanded  shutdown

Macbook Air 13" mid 2013

1.7 Ghz Intel Core I7

8GB 1600 Mhz DDR3

OS 10.11.3 El Capitan

My wife's laptop specs above, has recently started shutting itself down without command while plugged into ac power.  On the display was 'Press any key to continue'

Disk First Aid shows no problems.  Coconut battery shows normal capacity available.

Does anybody have any ideas for me to get ahead of this problem?  Thanks in advance.

Jim

    Thanks.

I'll try some of the suggestions in the referenced letter before bringing the machine to a pro..

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Please launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

    In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION â–¹ System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View â–¹ Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

When you post the report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

    A

Please remove the Sophos product by following the instructions on this page, and also this one, if applicable. If you have a different version, the procedure may be different.

Back up all data before making any changes. Never install any "anti-virus" or "anti-malware" software again.

    B

    Are any peripherals connected?

No peripherals connected.  Sophos removed and verified.  Now we'll just have to wait and see if that fixed the issue.

Thanks so much for your guidance.

Don't be surprised if you still get panics. In that case, you're dealing with a hardware fault, and the machine needs to be tested and serviced at an Apple Store.

    Thanks Linc,

I have the same issue and am using your instructions to help solve... but, why remove the Anti-virus software?

    Thanks,

    Anwar,

If you look at the code lines I pasted as instructed by Linc, you will see these two lines at the top of the kext lines... this indicates that these might well have been the cause of the kernal panic...

Sophos is the antivirus software that was installed on my wife's laptop.     Since I removed the software she has not had any uncommanded shutdowns.

    Hey Jim,

How do I get the above report for myself? My mac continues to sporadically shut down as well...

    Thanks,
