classic ipod error message 2005

I have an ipod classic 80g and it is stuck on the do not disconnect screen in the disk mode font without the disk mode showing, can be reset and shows the apple then goes to the ok to disconnect when not plugged into the laptop or do not disconnect when connected to itunes. Itunes does not show the device on the itunes page and itunes freezes when connected to the ipod.
