Q: BOOTCAMP partition boot problems

Hi, I have seen a few posts that are very similar to mine, but I cannot seem to get to the bottom of this issue. Here is the background on what happened:

I was running El Capitan on a single OS X partition and decided to run Boot Camp Assistant and install Windows 10 on a new partition. This worked perfectly and I was using Windows and booting back and forth. I then decided that I would like to create a new partition to easily share files between the 2 OS's using a Fat-32 file system so that both OS's could have read/write access. I did this with Disk Utility on the Mac side and everything seemed to go smoothly. Also, I did not touch my BOOTCAMP partition, but took all the space for the new partition from the Mac side. Everything seemed fine.....until I tried to boot back into BOOTCAMP. Now this partition is not recognized as bootable, though it is accessible from within the Mac side and everything seems in tact.

I ran the diskutil list command and here is the output:

/dev/disk0 (internal, physical):

   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER

   0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *500.3 GB   disk0

5:       Microsoft Basic Data BOOTCAMP                115.0 GB   disk0s5

Tylers-MacBook-Pro-3:~ tylerdouglas$ diskutil info disk0s5

My theory was that because the BOOTCAMP partition moved from 4 to 5, this somehow confused things. I decided that I didn't care any more about having the shared partition, so I erased it. I then tried to delete this partition, but I am unable to do this using Disk Utility in regular or recovery mode. I have tried unmounting and then deleting in both modes. I have scoured the the internet looking for a solution and I am completely stuck. This seems like it should be a super simple fix, but it's frustrating that I can't figure it out. I don't think I have damaged or corrupted anything and I just need to be able to boot into Bootcamp.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks in advance!

I still haven't gotten this issue figured out. Haven't really dug any deeper, but would like to use my BootCamp again without completely redoing it. I know this is possible and can probably be fixed in a relatively short time. If someone could kindly give me little guidance I would greatly appreciate it!

    1. What year/model is your Mac?

    2. Can you post the output of the following commands?

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

         sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s5 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

         sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

Can you use Re: [Help] Can't boot to windows (8.1) after resizing partition as a reference and run the steps? You will no longer be a able to see OSX partition from Windows after these steps.

Thank you SOOOO much! I saw that thread before, but was scared to do anything that may damage my partitions. I looked at the example and they really had pretty much the identical situation, so I followed the instructions very carefully and it worked perfectly!!

You are a life saver! Thanks!

Well, I spoke too soon! Now I can't boot into Mac.....

When I try to boot into Mac it gives me a message saying that the computer restarted because of a problem. It says to press any key or wait a few seconds and then runs a bunch of system checks and hangs up and restarts every time.

    Any advice???

i tried booting into recovery and I was able to. I didnt really do anything while in recovery, but I am trying to boot into my regular Mac partition again and it hangs up at the same place every time. The last output from the logs on the left says "System uptime in nanoseconds: ....."

I have powered it down manually a couple times and restarted and it freezes in the same spot every time. Until any further instruction I'm just going to let it sit for a while and see if it can ever get past this.

If you can boot into Local Recovery or Internet Recovery, check the output of Fdisk, and see if more than one partition has been flagged to be bootable.

Here is what I got. I don't see anything identifying what is bootable except the Darwin Boot on #2. Isn't this my recovery partition? Not sure how that got to #2. And I think my Mac OS is sitting at #4 now, which I think is the problem. Not sure what to do from here...

Boot normally in OS X, run GPT Disk, open a Terminal, and type each command. Once you finish all the steps, post the contents from the first command to the last one, before you reboot. I assume, you can shutdown your Mac, power it back up and hold Alt/Option key and select OS X to boot OS X.
