Q: BOOTCAMP partition boot problems

Hi, I have seen a few posts that are very similar to mine, but I cannot seem to get to the bottom of this issue. Here is the background on what happened:

I was running El Capitan on a single OS X partition and decided to run Boot Camp Assistant and install Windows 10 on a new partition. This worked perfectly and I was using Windows and booting back and forth. I then decided that I would like to create a new partition to easily share files between the 2 OS's using a Fat-32 file system so that both OS's could have read/write access. I did this with Disk Utility on the Mac side and everything seemed to go smoothly. Also, I did not touch my BOOTCAMP partition, but took all the space for the new partition from the Mac side. Everything seemed fine.....until I tried to boot back into BOOTCAMP. Now this partition is not recognized as bootable, though it is accessible from within the Mac side and everything seems in tact.

I ran the diskutil list command and here is the output:

/dev/disk0 (internal, physical):

   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER

   0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *500.3 GB   disk0

My theory was that because the BOOTCAMP partition moved from 4 to 5, this somehow confused things. I decided that I didn't care any more about having the shared partition, so I erased it. I then tried to delete this partition, but I am unable to do this using Disk Utility in regular or recovery mode. I have tried unmounting and then deleting in both modes. I have scoured the the internet looking for a solution and I am completely stuck. This seems like it should be a super simple fix, but it's frustrating that I can't figure it out. I don't think I have damaged or corrupted anything and I just need to be able to boot into Bootcamp.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks in advance!

Yes. In BC Assistant If you use the first two options "Create USB..." and "Download..." and provide your W10 ISO when prompted. This will create a USB Installer. You can now boot from this installer using Alt/Option key and get to command prompt and run bootrec.exe /rebuildBCD to repair W10.

Perfect. Just wanted to make sure I was on the same page. Thanks! I'll let you know how it goes. I still have the stupid extra partition I created, which was the start of all these problems. If I get everything working again and then change the formatting of that back to FAT32/ExFAT, do you think I will run in to problems? At some point I reformatted it to OSX Journaled, but if it's there wasting space on my HD, I might as well use it! Was thinking of going back to my original plan (which I now think is stupid haha) of having a shared partition to share files needed on both sides. Since the Mac side has access to the files from the BootCamp partition, I should have just created a folder on my desktop in BC for this and I would have been done!!!! Stupid. But, since I don't want to reformat either of my partitions with OS's on them, I would like to not waste the space that I assigned to the extra partition if possible. I'm just weary of reformatting it because of the sensitive nature of partitioning, which I've obviously learned the hard way!

    1. Convert the 'shared' disk space to make it shareable.

         diskutil eraseVolume fat32 SHARED disk0s4

    2. Use Re: [Help] Can't boot to windows (8.1) after resizing partition as reference to make SHARED visible to both OSes. This will remove the ability to see the OSX partition from the Windows side directly. You will need to use SHARED to move files between the two OSes.

Okay, that's exactly how I understood it and that is exactly what I was going to do through Disk Utility. Just was scared that this would mess up my MBR again somehow haha!

Thanks again for all the support. Hopefully I have this resolved now. I will be running the repair on my BC in a little bit and I'll report back.

    Okay, here's my next hurdle...

    image.jpeg

When I booted, I booted, I used the EFI partition of the Windows flash drive. Am I doing something wrong? Should I have booted into the main Windows partition of the flash drive installer?

You will need to run /rebuildBCD on C:. You are in X: which is your external both drive.

I figured that was a problem. If you notice in my pixture, the first command was my attempt to change the directory to the C drive. So, with the bootable USB, I see 2 partitions, should I boot into the main one (Windows) or the EFI one? And once I'm in the command prompt, how do I change the directory to C:/?

Boot into Windows. Use Diskpart.exe attribute command to allow read-write access to C: and then you can go to C: and /rebuildBCD.

Forgive me for my ignorance here, but I'm a little confused still. I booted into the main Windows partition of the install USB and got to the command prompt. I think I'm in the right place, but I'm kind of stuck again. Here is what I'm looking at:

    image.jpeg

If I type "volume" in at this point it just shows the list of commands again. I can't figure out how to allow read-write access to the C: volume and I cant figure out how to change the active directory so that I'm actually sending commands to C: instead of my flash drive.

So is the correct command after this "attributes volume clear readonly"?

Then, because the selected volume is still C: at this point, I can just run the rebuild command???

Sorry to post so many times, but I am just trying to give as much information as possibl. I referenced the other thread and thought I would post the output of some of the same commands. Here you go:
