My MacBook Air thinks my printer is a scanner?

I'm trying to add my printer (a Canon MP230) to my MacBook so I can print an assignnt. My MacBook Air is only picking it up as a scanner. It used to work as a printer before with the same MacBook however it just stopped and this is happening now.... So I reset the printer settings and I can't even add it back as a printer.

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

Greetings Applehelper2000,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that your Canon MP230 series printer and scanner is no longer printing as you would expect. This printer is a supported printer for both printing and scanning according to the following article.

Printer and scanner software available for download for your Mac - Apple Support

To troubleshoot, I would first suggest performing a software update as described in the same article.

Check for software updates before connecting your printer or scanner. This updates the list of the latest supported printer and scanner models on your Mac. If you don't check for updates before trying to connect a new printer, you might not see available software when you connect your device. If you're using a Wi-Fi printer, be sure to connect your printer to your Wi-Fi network before adding it to your Mac.

If the issue continues, read over and work through the suggested steps from the next article.
