Q: Use my ms outlook backup?

This is the first day using a Mac. I just bought a MacBook Pro with Retina and have installed El Captain. I know I will be asking you kind people a LOT of questions, so sorry in advance.

I have a backup on my external for MS Outlook 2010.  Can I use this in Mail? If yes, how please?

Also, I have a very full calendar and a lot of contacts in that .pst too. How can I put them on my Mac?

Would I be better off buying MS Outlook for Mac?  I really do not want to start buying unless absolutely necessary.

If it helps, I used Outlook for years, but it is only used for home use.

    Hi megabytes,

Congrats on your new MacBook Pro!. I understand that you would like to transfer the information from Outlook from your PC to your new Mac. I can help you out with that.

This is something that can be done by using Migration Assistant. When you started your Mac up, you should have seen a screen to migrate information from a previous Mac or PC. All you would need to do is download Windows Migration Assistant for your PC and follow the steps outlined there. If you have set up your Mac already, you will want to run the Migration Assistant app there as well. You will need to be on the same network, wired or wirelessly. Once a connection is establish, you will be shown what content can be transferred. Your emails will be migrated into Mail and calendar events will be migrated into the Calendar app. Take a look at the article below for more details on how to do this.

    Really?  That would be brilliant.

I was told today that I needed to install something called Bridge. I did that earlier but did not want to try it until the morning (it is 9:30pm here).

I will check it out tomorrow morning.

Will my contacts and calendar be organised the same as in Outlook?  I realise that they will not be in the same place but will it look the same with all of my details?

    Hey megabytes,

When using Migration Assistant, things will be copied over as is. So any contact groups that you have made will be created in the Contacts App. Any email folders that have been created for organization in Outlooks would be copied over to the Mail app. If you have events that use different calendar groups, those would be created as well in the Calendar app. The look will feel the same, just handled in a separate apps.

    Take care.

Did I miss something?  I have my .pst on an external hard drive not my PC which is no more.

Please tell me how I can put my mail, contacts and calendar from the external to my Macbook Pro

    Hello megabytes,

With that bit of information, it does make the previous steps not possible as it does require to the PC to function. You would then have to use the third party solution that you had suggested to you. If you would like more options, you can always search the Mac App Store for a .pst converter. The Mac App Store does have a few options and below are some of those apps. They do cost some money and I would recommend looking over the reviews before making a purchase.

    PST Converter Pro

I decided not to do a PST converter. I might still do it but I would want to be with someone who knew what they were doing.

I finally figured out how to connect my old PC to my TV so I could see the screen. I used Migration Assistant up to the point of checking off the files I wanted transferred. I was not sure where my .pst was but I think it is still in Documents (I will check later).

I stopped because I wanted to do a bit more research on this.  I have read that people did not get their emails that were as in MS Outlook on the .pst file but from the online account. I have Gmail and Yahoo UK accounts and I really do  not want all of the emails that are still online.

Also, are my Contacts and Calendar from my .pst file on MS Outlook on my PC going to transfer to Mac as seen on MS Outlook with no problems?

    Hey megabytes,

They will copy over to the respected apps. So your contacts will move over to the Contact app with the groups that were created along with it. Your calendars would also move to the Calendar app with the different calendars that you have set up. Look over the previous articles that I posted to look over that information. If Outlook does work, it will pull the information from there. If you run into issues, you can always contact Apple Support for additional help with Migration Assistant.

I found out that our small island has an authorised Apple repair shop, so I thought I would just hand this thing over and have them do it for me. Problem is he said I should buy MS Office with Outlook and import my pst that way. That really is not what I wanted to hear, so I am back to trying to do this myself with the help of the web and obviously this wonderful forum.

I found a very good video on youTube that gave me a few more tips which are helpful. I am not sure if I can put a link on here but in the end he said to get PST Converter Pro as you said norm123, so that is what I will do.

I am going to restore this mac to factory settings and start from scratch, but before I do I am going to play around with Mail, Pages etc so if I do get into trouble, I know I am going to format it anyway and it will clear my mistakes :-/.

I will get back to you to let you know if I succeeded or failed....

Sorry this took so long, but I have been going through a long process of trying things that would hopefully work.

The video I told you about said that you must use Migration Assistant on an unused Mac, so I formatted and started MA transfer from my PC connected to my TV. it said 24 hours and it kept climbing. Suddenly my PC and Mac went to sleep even though I have never had my PC do that. Of course I could not change the settings on the Mac because I was supposed to use MA immediately after formatting.  So I decided to buy PST Converter Pro as you suggested. I gave up trying to put the Calendar on so just went to the cloud and got it from my iPhone - no problems. My Contacts transferred from my external but I do not have any of my folders/categories which really bothers me. It is going to take me ages to re-create them into Contacts! Any help on that would be appreciated.

As for Mail, I have been having one problem after another. At first, thousands of emails were downloaded so I deleted a lot of them online in Gmail. Then the next day I opened Mail, all of my mail was gone except what was imported. So I went online again and ALL of my mail has disappeared in every folder in Gmail.  I am just getting over that but I now have problems with how Mail is sending/receiving into various folders.  I will start a new thread over the weekend for your help on that problem.

Thanks for your help with this one!
