I understand that you've tried to reindex spotlight on your Mac, and the process is unresponsive. I recommend that you restart the computer, and try again. Make sure you're following the steps in the link below to reindex.

Thank you for replying. Yes, I did follow the standard steps that you suggested for Spotlight to re-index. It appears to have done so in that I do get the expected results when I search for files or in Notes or in Mail. What still leaves some doubt in my mind, however, is that after three days the index progress bar is at about three-eighths in the Spotlight search window. It may be that this is just a quirk of El Capitan, but I think I will look up the terminal command that will show indexing status.
