Q: Mac won't boot into recovery; might be related to Time Machine

I recently purchased a new Mac with El Capitan. Last night I finished a Time Machine backup to my older Mac (also El Capitan) and installed the Time Machine backup on the new Mac.  When it was done installing, it ceased to function - I just hit a blue screen. After an hour or so I rebooted and it has never progressed past the Apple symbol and the spinning wheel.  I tried to reboot into Recovery Mode to try a re-install but it won't let me.  I then went into Safe Mode with the reports turned on and it never completed booting up, it kept having the same error pop up - "tried to access a compressed file or unregistered type 7" or "8" over and again.

I'm at a loss.  Is there any way I can boot into Recovery Mode, or otherwise get this machine running again?

Thanks for your help.

Boot the MBP with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys.

That should result in a display showing a revolving globe:

By following the directions, you will be connected to the Apple servers and be able reinstall the original OSX.  You may have to erase the HDD first before installing the OSX.

    Ciao.

Thanks for that tip.  I went ahead and tried that as well, with the computer plugged into my LAN.  However, it didn't connect me to the Apple servers. All I've got is the Apple symbol and spinning wheel, still.

Any other thoughts / suggestions would be appreciated.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.

If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

You may have a poor Internet connection.

Try this.  Boot your old MBP into Target disk Mode with the new MBP as the target:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201462

Erase the HDD on the new MBP and then use a third party utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner to copy from the old MBP to the new.

Or, use the old MBP to make a USB El Capitan installer using DiskMaker X.

    http://diskmakerx.com/

Then use that to erase the HDD and install El Capitan OSX.

    Ciao.

Thanks for the tip.  I'll give it a try once I find a Firewire cable to make that work.

EDIT: Meant to mention - I don't believe the internet connection is an issue, I've got a good one.
