Q: How do I connect cinema display (A1081) with Macbrook Pro (A1278)?

I am trying to figure out how to connect my cinema display (A1081) with Macbrook Pro (A1278)?

I have the Cinema HD display power adapter (A1097), and a DVI to Thunderbolt adapter.  I've got both plugged in and the display is powered on because the light is on.  The computer can definitely tell that it's connecting to a display because it flashes when I plug in the thunderbolt, however, the display itself doesn't show anything and my system preferences do not show a connected display.

I do not have the firewire connected, but I didn't think it was necessary.  I'd have to get an adapter for that, but it doesn't make sense that I would need that for the display to work.

Can someone help me figure this out?

Really appreciate it, I'd hate to throw out a good monitor!
