How do I get rid of grayed out star ratings?

On my Playlist for my Top Rated songs I get some songs with a grayed out star rating of 5 stars. I keep trying different things to get rid of them but nothing works. I have tried selecting them and unselecting the stars but they stay gray. Any solutions?

Mac G5, Mac OS X (10.4.3)

The way I got rid of "grey stars" is to show iTunes music library using the Albums view. Select an album with songs that have grey stars. Right-click the album artwork "tile" and Album Rating -> None.
