Mac OS XTry a different headphones.
Do a Reset (restart) if you have not already
Learn how to reset your iPod - Apple Support
If the problem still occurs after a Reset, you may want to do a Restore on the iPod using iTunes. This erases the iPod, reinstalls its software, and sets it to default settings.

I carried out a reset and the sound came back for a short period then disappeared again.
I have tried various headphones but they don't make any difference

Mac OS XIf the sound came back after doing a Reset, even for a short period, I suppose that's good. Did you also do a Restore on the iPod using iTunes?
