Q: iMac 10.8.5 OS 4GB memory late 2009 edition upgrade to Yosemite help

We have

iMac 10.8.5 OS 4GB memory late 2009 edition that we are looking to upgrade to Yosemite.    We are getting an error message that says there is not enough memory/ram and the system is maxed out in its memory capabilities..... is there any other way to make the upgrade happen?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

The 27 inch Mac should have 4 RAM slots. The 21.5" only has 2 slots.

The 27" can take up to 4*8GB sticks of RAM for a max of 32GB.

The 21.5 can take up to 2*8GB sticks for a max of 16GB.

Beyond that we really need the specific details of the Mac.  Hopefully you can post them for us tomorrow.

Only certain 27 inch 2009 and 2010 model iMacs can take 32 GBs of RAM.

    I have a 27 inch screen, late 2009 iMac with a core2duo CPU.

The 2009 and 2010 core2duo models can only take a total of 16 GBs of RAM.

Only the quad core 2009 and 2010 iMac models can take a total of 32 GBs of RAM.

Yes, that is correct. Still 16GB is more than 4GB.

Either way, we need to know exactly what iMac we are dealing with.

I am cuious to know how you were able to download and install OS X 10.10 Yosemite since it is no longer avalable from the Mac App Store and hasn't been in quite some time.

If you installed an illegal copy from some sort of torrent website or some untrusted source, don't be surprised if you Mac is given some unwanted "gifts" as part of the OS X 10.10 download and install.
