Q: IMac 21.5-Inch, Late 2013 crashing non-stop

Hi Everybody,

Here's the details on my iMac -

OS X Yosemite

Version 10.10.5

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013)

Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Startup disk Unlimited

Graphics Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

------------------------------------------

Problem -

My iMac is crashing intermittently, with no consistent interval between crashes. (sometimes it doesn't crash for a couple hours, and then it crashes every 20 minutes and stops).  I did not install any software or updates which could have triggered the crashing - it occurred out of the blue.

I have followed every step -

1. Reset RAM

2. Reinstalled clean copy of OS X (even though i backed up afterwards from Time Machine)

3. Verified / Repaired permissions

4. Unplugged all external devices

5. Uninstalled most third-party apps except for verified developers / software - Dropbox, Adobe, Skype, VMWare Fusion, Firefix, etc...

6. Created a couple tickets with Apple Support representatives

7. Ran EtreCheck - reports everything is ok

8. Ran MEMTest - memory is ok

9. Ran Apple Diagnostics - everything checks out

10. Followed a bunch of the instructions in this community, instructions from Apple Support, and created this panic report using a community member steps -

Imac crashing on Yosemite, Etrecheck report included

I can't read these crash logs.   I did see: plugin-container

    post the results of etrecheck.

Try a safe boot. This will leave some plugins

Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile; wait awhile while you harddrive

         is being checked.

           http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455

What features and apps does safe boot leave out?

Whatever plugin-container is it having problems. Showed up in both of your reports.

    100%    plugin-container

You should download the latest version of [  92%  ] firefox.

I'd get rid of plugin-container.  See if the problem persists.  Re-run etrecheck in safe and normal mode.  One or more of the not loaded programs is causing problems.

    1. Evernote - i quit, uninstalled, and re-installed - no crashes

    2. Microsoft Entourage 2008 - (i had been having various problems with Entourage), therefore i quit, uninstalled and upgraded to Microsoft Outlook 2011 - no crashes

    3. Firefox - i quit, uninstalled, re-installed and the machine crashed - therefore uninstalled completely and the machine has been stable with no crashes since.

Thank you all for your assistance - i will reply back if my machine crashes again.

    Best Regards,

    Glad to hear.  Happy computer!

I'm running Firefox 45.0.2 on Yosemite 10.10.5 without a problem; as far as I know.

Could try chrome or icab web browsers.

    Web  browser crashed.

com.apple.WebKit  many web browsers use the the safari internals these days.

    start with these basic things.

You may want to run these "standard" fixes if the problem persists.

    1) Check the amount of free space on your harddrive.  You should have a several gigs free.

    2) You should run disk utility

          Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility

          a) verify the disk

          b) update your permissions.

    3) Try a safe boot.

Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile; wait awhile while you harddrive

         is being checked.

           http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455

What features and apps does safe boot leave out?

           https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

    4) Run hardware diagnostics if you have them.

Have you found a cause and resolution for these kernel panics? I have a multiple labs of this same model computer that are all experiencing random kernel panic/restarts while a non-admin user is using Safari to visit sites running flash.  These same users can use Google Chrome on the same sites with no problem. As far as I can tell local admin users are not effected.

AppleCare support reviewed console logs and indicated that it was a "sandbox" problem. He showed me several lines where Sandbox was denied access to Safari files. Suggested fixes of: upgrade to El Capitan; run disk utility to repair permissions; start in Safe Mode; give read/write access to everyone on the Safari.app bundle; reset NVRAM/PRAM.

    Repairing permissions did not help.

    Reset NVRAM/PRAM had not effect.

Upgrade to El Capitan may happen over the summer.

Not sure what to do after starting in Safe Mode, do I then login the non-admin students and ask them to try Safari again, then wait for the kernel panic. They have been random throughout each teaching bell. Some happen in the first ten minutes, some as long as 45 minutes later. The only thing constant is the use of Safari/Flash.

Hesitant to alter permissions on Safari bundle.

This all started happening after installing the 10.10.5 Security Update (build is now 10.10.5 (14F1713)). All applications, plugins, etc have been removed and reinstalled with the latest updated versions. During my troubleshooting/research I read an article that indicated that my /System/Library/Extensions/Sandbox.kext file may be corrupt and that I should replace it with a copy from a known good machine. I can't seem to locate that article now to clarify that the replacement file needs to come from the same model machine or if it can come from a different model iMac or MacBook Pro. Not willing to update any other labs for fear of "breaking" more computers. I did also try reinstalling the latest 10.10.5 combo update, no glory.

Any suggestions or assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Additional information. I am at a different school today with basically the same model of iMacs these are Early 2013 instead of Late 2013. Ran all of the same updates with no issues. I did notice the build on these shows as 14F27 instead of the above mentioned 14F1713. This page: Find the OS X version and build number on your Mac - Apple Support  indicates that the correct latest build for 10.10.5 is in fact 14F27. The machines with build 14F1317 show no updates available. Can someone explain the difference in build numbers to me? I can't find build number 14F1713 in any Apple documents.

Thanks and have a great day.
