Q: Step counter stopped mid-day

I really count on my step and activity apps on my watch for accurate recording of my workouts and walks. Usually it's great.

Today, my step counter was at about 4,555 mid-afternoon, distance 1.78 miles. At that point, my husband and I went out for a long walk, one we do all the time. It always adds about 6,600 steps and 3.25 miles to my daily tally.

At the end of the walk, when my total steps SHOULD have read about 11,000 steps give or take, both the steps and distance were the same as they had been at the BEGINNING of the walk (4,555 steps and 1.78 miles).

What's going on?

I've only had the watch since Christmas and this does not make me happy.

Help!

    Hi

Check that Wrist Detection is turned on (on your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > General > Wrist Detection).

If Passcode is also turned on, your watch may have been locked before you started your walk. When using your watch with a passcode:

    - Ensure that you unlock your watch after placing it on your wrist.

    - Check that you are not wearing your watch too loosely. It may otherwise lock automatically during wear if, due to losing contact with your skin, it believes that it has been removed from your wrist. A loose fitting band can trigger this by allowing your watch to lift from your wrist and/or by allowing clothing (for example, the end of a sleeve) to slip beneath the back of the watch.

During exercise, Apple Watch should be worn snugly on the top of your wrist. Apple suggests that you consider tightening your band before workouts and loosening it again afterwards. Better contact with your wrist may also improve heart rate sensor performance when tracking workouts using the Workout app.

It may otherwise help to close all open apps on your iPhone (double-click on the Home button, then swipe up on each app preview) and then restart both your iPhone and your watch. Turn both off together, then restart your iPhone first:

    - To turn your watch off: press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; drag it to turn off.

    - To turn it back on: press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
