Is There A Fake Google Earth Virus?

I installed google earth on my mac several months ago. It did not show up under applications or internet plugins. Since then I have been trying to delete it, but cannot find it. It has been showing up in Safari under plugins. I disabled the plugin, but would like to delete the whole program. Any one heard of a fake google earth Trojan or Virus? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to find it and remove it?

No virus.

If you'd like to remove all of the Google Earth components from your Mac, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to Finder.
  2. Open the Home Directory icon labeled with your user ID.
  3. Delete the files at Library > Caches > Google Earth.
  4. Also, please delete the files at Library > Application Support > Google Earth.

Also: Drag the

/Library/Internet Plug-ins/Google Earth Web Plug-in.plugin
file to the trash, then restart your browser.

I've done all these things and already followed those directions and searched for the things mentioned. They are not there. As in, the plug in and app and cache do not exist for google earth. However, the plugin is still registering as existing by Safari. I have disabled it but cannot remove the google earth program because there is nothing to remove where it is supposed to be.

Right after I downloaded google earth, I looked for it and the application never showed up so I have not even been able to use it. This is why I think something is wrong and it really wasn't google earth that I downloaded.

There are no viruses for OS X, so no matter what might be the cause of your problems, that's not it. Try downloading Find Any File. I've heard more than a few people here say it's better for searching on your hard drive than either Finder or Spotlight, and it might be able to help you track down these files that have seemingly vanished into thin air.

where did you download it from?

plug-in

https://www.google.com/earth/explore/products/plugin.html

they have a support page btw for uninstall (same directions as Duane posted)

google earth

google earth pro

if you grabbed any of these from another site they may not be legitimate installs, but they are not virus (it would have been widely reported if something this mainstream was illegitimate) they could be adware or some other nonsense. As a rule stay away from downloading from Cnet.com, softsonic.com, download.com, drivers.com, softpedia.com, and try to download from the developers site if they offer it. These mass DL sites have become a hotbed of crapware distribution sites that act like that little bird that actually but garbage back into the alligators mouth and the other birds are like "knock it off Jerry!" - ok I have no analogy for this other than pay attention to the sites you obtain downloads from, always try to use the developers site, not a 3rd party.

I have Google Earth installed and have all of those items.

If you download it from Google, it downloads as a disk image (.dmg). You must open that disk image and run the installer from the disk image. If you didn't run the installer, Google Earth is not installed.

Did you download this from somewhere that wasn't Google?
