Mar 18, 2016 12:30 PM in response to TahoeTealby Vinceassociate,Your TV should work. The only thing that looks like it could be the issue is the display frequency. Your TV requires 60 Hz.
You can read this:
Get help with audio, video, or power on Apple TV - Apple Support
Note this section:
If you need more help with video issues, try adjusting the HDMI and display settings on your Apple TV. Go to Settings > Audio and Video. If the screen is blank and you can’t go to Settings, you can use your remote to change the resolution:
- For Apple TV (4th generation), hold Menu and Volume Down for five seconds. For Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation), hold Menu and Up for five seconds.
- After you let go of the buttons, your Apple TV will switch to a new resolution every 20 seconds. Select OK to choose a resolution. Select Cancel to quit.

Mar 18, 2016 12:41 PM in response to Vinceassociateby TahoeTeal,You're right, it should work. I've read the Apple Support info on AV issues. I connected the Gen 3 to another TV so I could look at the display settings. They're on automatic. Doing the "hold menu and up for 5 seconds" didn't result in any picture as well. Sure seems like a problem with the TV yet the Directv HD receiver works fine on either input and the Gen 3 works as it should on 2 other TV's. Still scratching my head.

Mar 18, 2016 12:55 PM in response to TahoeTealby Vinceassociate,One last trial:
Using the other TV set the ATV output setting to 720 60 or 1080 60 (assuming it works on the other tv) and not automatic. Then switch the ATV to the problem TV.

Mar 24, 2016 10:21 AM in response to TahoeTealby Vinceassociate,What does the resolution lights on the Direct TV unit indicate it is outputting when using it?
Also when you pressed menu and up for 5 seconds then released the buttons, how long did you wait to check all the resolutions?
Also are you saying the display remained blank the entire time?
You don't even see anything (even static or a blip) when powering up the ATV?

Mar 24, 2016 11:54 AM in response to Rudegarby TahoeTeal,You may have a point. I see no mention of what version HDMI this Panasonic TV supports in the documentation I have. Even HDMI 1.0 supported 1080p. Apple makes no mention of what HDMI version is required for a Gen 3 or Gen 4 ATV.
