Q: canon incompatibility after el capitan upgrade

Hi,

I have a mac book air (middle 2013). After upgrading to el capitan my printer canon Mx 310 doesn't work anymore.

When I try to print a document my computer says that I need to download a new driver. Apple store doesn't have it. Canon doesn't have it but says that the old driver should work with El Capitan. I called apple assistance asking for an advice and a very polite lady said to me that it's not apple business because if the printer driver doesn't work anymore with the new system I should change the printer or ask Canon for an update.

I replied to her that, in my modest opinion, if Apple releases a new OS version, Apple should also care about the compatibility with the old users programs and drivers (can you imagine if all your programs doesn't work anymore after an upgrade). Also because if I pay an Apple product which normally cost more than the double of any other competitor, I wait the product works perfectly and without waste of time.

Anyway, anyone has a tip for me except to downgrade to Montain lion or buy a new printer?

Ps. I'm seriously tempted to leave apple products. The service and the products, after Steve Jobs dead, dramatically decreased compared to their cost.

MacBook Air, iOS 7.0.3

Printer and scanner software available for download for your Mac - Apple Support

That printer should work. Try resetting your "printing system."

Disconnect the printer if it is connected, the open  > System Preferences > Printers and Scanners > Control-Click (Right click) on the area that shows your printers > Click "Reset Printing System. NOTE: This will remove all printers you have added to the computer.

Once that is done, plug your printer back into the computer. Then check the App Store for updates. If it is a wireless printer, press the to add the printer by it's name, and set the "Use" to "Auto Select"

    Test the printer.

As a side note, it is up to third party developers to ensure their products work with the operating system, not the other way around. While Apple (and Windows for that matter) do want third party products to work with their systems, operating systems would never be released if Apple had to wait for everyone to update their drivers. Not having an updated driver to work with El Capitan is Canon's fault. A lot of printer companies tend to just stop supporting their printers instead of making them compatible with new software. It's pretty frustrating.
