Q: Multiple crashes

I've been running OS X 10.11.3 for a couple of months now.  I continue to get multiple crashes on each of several apps (Safari, notes, calendar, email).  I have run several diagnostics and have also reloaded the OS.  Force quitting the app doesn't work, meaning that if I try to force quit the app the app still doesn't work when I try to restart the app.  Or, I'm unable to force quite.  This is either through the using the dock or through using command + option + esc.  The only fix is to restart my computer.  I have a macbook pro which is almost a year old with 8GB of RAM.  Any suggestions?

Do you have any of the following installed on your computer?  If so, uninstall them following the developer's instructions.

    • anti-virus programs (AVG, Avast, Avira, Intego, Kaspersky, McAfee, Norton, Sophos, Trusteer, etc.)
    • "maintenance" applications (AVG Cleaner, CCleaner, CleanMyMac, CleanMyDrive, MacCleaner, MacKeeper, MemoryCleaner, TuneMyMac, etc.)

All those programs, plus others like it that I didn't name, have been known to compromise performance of Apple computers.

No, I don't use any of these programs.  I don't have any anti-virus, security or performance apps installed.

Am I correct when I say that you did not have a crash since the last startup (two days)?

    I suggest following:

    > Turn off FileVault, this will take a considerable time

    > in SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems: remove all entries, with the minus sign: you have to start these apps by hand when you want to run them., and so you avoid having more than one browser running automatically. After this Restart.

    > when there is no need for Citrix: uninstall it.

    > Some cleaning:

. MacintoshHD->Library->InternetPlug-ins:  delete the two  AdobePDFViwer plugins: these are not necessary and the standard plugins are better.  Also dlete the Googletalkbrowser plugin.

. In Microsoft Office setting turn off "autoupdate"

    Now restart again.

After all this and as soon as FileVault is turnoff is ready, reindex Spotlight: Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes - Apple Support

this will also take some time (and CPU load)

When ready run again an etrecheck list.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

    Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

In this last one FileVault is off at last (you see that in the Disk Portion).

Citrix: yes one thing left but that is hardly the cause of crashes:

They do not cause issues but can be cleared:

Hold the Alt(option) key and in Finder goto   yourname-folder->Library->LaunchAgents  and find a file with   G2MUpdate in the name: delete that one. There are only very few plists in there.

Then to be clean even more: in MacintoshHD->Library->LaunchAgents  delete the ....Adobe.ARM.... plist,

then in  MacintoshHD->Library->LaunchDaemons   delete the two  --Adobe.ARM... plists.

    Restart.

Now it is very clean. I would not know what can cause a crash now. Maybe hardware.

After all this, do what Linc asks. Maybe there is an indication what happens, although it will probably take some time before a crash occurs.

    Lex

(I return late tomorrow night, 1100 KM)
