How to print over Ip protocol.

Hi everyone,

im new in this section of the forum, and hope this topic fits good in here... Anyway here's my problem.

I've bought an Hp Color laserJet printer (which has the rj45 connection for Lans), and i've read somewhere in the web that people having the same printer i have, just connected it to a wireless adsl router, and both Macs and pcs can share it and print wtv they want to, without using any Usb cable, (this because the printer has an integrated server web).

I can print wireless with my PowerBook, but this happens because the printer is connected not only to the router, but even to my iMac. So now im asking you if there is any chance to me to put away the Usb cable between the iMac and the printer.
I've tried to do that following the Apple instructions, but didnt work out. (You know added a printer by inserting the printer Ip and bla bla bla...)

Any idea??? Please guys help me...

Thanks in advance.

Open the Printer Setup Utility and select Printer Setup Utility Help from the Help menu. Search for "add printer." You'll find numerous topics including printing to a network printer.

To use a network printer the printer itself must be configured to use DHCP (if it has a DHCP server built-in to the printer's network card) or an IP address must be assigned to the printer that is within the range of IP addresses assigned by the DHCP server in the network router (may be 192.168.xxx.xxx) or if the printer supports Bonjour and/or AppleTalk then it should be detected automatically by Printer Setup Utility when you attempt to Add a printer.

Of course you must have a printer drive installed for the particular printer model. If one is not included with the set of drivers that come with OS X then you will need to obtain a proper drive from HP's support site.

One thing I would try is to change the IP of the printer to one outside of the range the router will likely assign to the computers: 192.168.1.99, for example. You will need to include this IP in the printer setup. Add the printer as an LPR printer, provide the assigned IP address, and provide a basic name for the queue, such as HPColor. Don't use any special characters and keep the name to 8 characters. Select the printer driver from the drop down menu. You will need to do the same for all the other computers that will access this printer.

I don't know. If the printer is set up to use DHCP, then the router assigns the IP address. I don't know how you configured the printer. I'm not familiar with the model you have but most HP network printers have a front panel that is used for configuration. Consult the Setup Guide that came with the printer to learn how to configure the printer.

It's possible. I don't really know how you are configuring the printer. If you are setting a fixed IP address, then you also need to provide the router's gateway IP address (probably 192.168.1.1) and the network mask (probably 255.255.255.0). If you are using DHCP on the printer, then you just need to activate DHCP and TCP/IP. As I said before this is usually configured from the printer's front panel per instructions in the printer's Setup Guide or User Manual.
