HT201510: Setting up Time Capsule for the first time

Q: How do I troubleshoot a self-assigned IP error on my TC?

I cannot get connectivity from my Airport Time Capsule after switching cable modems.

1. Cisco DCP2008 cable modem works fine connected directly to either of my two MacBook Airs.

2. I've called my ISP several times; they confirm my signal is fine and modem is working fine.

3. TC is in bridge mode, ipv6 automatica/tunnel receives ipv6 relay error.

a) Confirmed modem and ISP should have no problem with ipv6

b) I can access Google, FB, youtube (ipv4), no other sites.

c) No other devices can connect (iPad, iPhones)

4. Option #1 - Change TC to Link-Local, relay error goes away but then I get a self-assigned IP. No Internet connection.

5. Try DHCP & NAT (instead of default DHCP) in network settings. Keep Link-local. TC is green light, but no Internet connection. Switch back to Automatic/DHCP, still no dice.

6. Try creating a new location in my wifi settings and renewing DHCP Lease, nothing.

I've tried all these configurations, rebooting, resetting, and sprinkling fairy dust.

TC worked five days ago with TWC Arris wi-fi modem set up (i believe) in bridge mode.

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Correction on the modem: That's DPC3008.

Bridge Mode for the AirPort Time Capsule is not the correct setting with a DPC 3008 modem.

Power off the modem completely by pulling the power cord from the back of the device

Disconnect the co-ax connector and Ethernet cable

Leave the modem powered off for at least 30 minutes.....60 would be better if possible

Change the Router Mode setting to DHCP and NAT on the AirPort Extreme, then power it off and wait

After the modem power down period, connect the co-ax connector on the modem

Connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule

Power up the modem and let it run for at least 10 minutes by itself

Then, power up the Time Capsule and let it run a few minutes

Set IPv6 to Link Local Only for now and verify that you can get a good connection.

Then, set up IPv6.  Comcast instructions are included in the link below. The same exact settings work on Time Warner.

If still no luck, you will need to reset the Time Capsule back to factory default settings and then try the set up again.

    Thanks, Bob.

Unfortunately this is essentially the same thing I did above (#5), but with more time rebooting the router. I just completed the steps again as you instructed giving it about 40 minutes of down time. The TC showed green and appeared to be working, but no Internet connectivity was possible. I had to disconnect, power down the modem and reconnect the ethernet to reply here.

Any other ideas? I'll try to reboot a couple more times using DHCP and NAT (assuming this modem is bridge mode by default?).

    Thanks.

The modem recognizes your Mac, but not the Time Capsule.  Until the modem completely resets, it will continue to only recognize your Mac, and it will ignore the Time Capsule.

Sometimes it takes 2+ hours for my ISP to allow the modem to completely reset when I am making a change to the device that connects to the modem, so try powering off the modem for an extended time.....3-4 hours, or even overnight, then try again in the morning. If there is a reset button on the modem, use it for that purpose, then power off the modem for the extended time period.

Or, with the Time Capsule connected to the modem, call the ISP and ask them if they can reset the modem for you from their headquarters.

If still no luck, you will need to reset the TC back to default settings and then configure it again.....which is what I usually do whenever I change the modem......but was trying to save you from this extra work if possible.

I called my ISP, had them reset, could see the wifi and the internet connected, but no connectivity from my Macbook Air.

Then I tried a soft reset (15 sec.) on the Time Capsule and I'm now back on wifi.

I think the difference is though I tried a reset a couple days ago, I had not tried a reset after switching from bridge mode to DHCP and NAT. After resetting, those changes came up as the default and hooked me up right away.

At any rate, problem finally solved.

    Thank you.
