target software not installed despite downloading driver successfully epson perfection1200u

since update to El Capitan, my trusty Epson Perfection 1200U is no longer functioning.

I have been to Epson site and checked that it should still be compatible.

Downloaded driver from Epson site and the patch that when run comes up with message

'target software to be updated is not installed'

Help much appreciated as otherwise, like another answer on forum, I will revert to using the

scanner with an old laptop with older software - annoying!

While the wording of the Alert is not entirely clear, it appears to be saying that the patch you're trying to install can't find the software it's designed to patch (update). One thing that's odd is that the Epson website in your screenshot is filtering content for the early PowerPC OS X rather than for Mac OS X - Intel which you undoubtedly have installed. If you select "Mac OS X - Intel" instead and redownload the patch, do you get the same result?

Alternatively, (and this may be a long shot) that scanner is very old and similar problems exist in Windows. For Windows, the solution was to install the drivers for the Epson Perfection 2400, and that worked. Those drivers are also available for OS X - Intel.
