Is my mid 2012 retina MacBook Pro Thunderbolt Display port hot pluggable?

Recently I've been told by an apple geek in my country that problems with my mid 2012 MacBook Pro with Retina display could come from plugging and unplugging the Thunderbolt Display while my computer is on.

These problems are sudden black screens that can only be solved with forced shut down and other black screen while powering up.

Is that right or do you think I have a problem with the video adapter?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)
