I just imported my contacts from my phone to my Macbook Air, but whenever I get a text notification on the top right of my screen, it shows the phone number, not the contact name. Once I go to iMessage, the name is shown. It's just annoying that I don't know who texted me until I actually go open iMessage. iCloud is turned on for both my Mac and my iPhone.

If iCloud is turned on, then you must not have your contacts stored in iCloud. Otherwise, you would not have needed to import them to your Mac, as you said you did.
So I'm confused.
Since you said "I just imported my contacts...", perhaps a restart of your Mac would help.
I just checked and message preview is already on.
Sorry for the confusing wording. By turning on iCloud, I was able to transfer my contacts onto my Mac. I didn't import them. I'll try restarting my Mac now.
