Q: iOS not recognizing built in microphone (6s)

iPhone 6s, iOS 9.2.1

Sometimes after making a call my phone will stop recognizing the mic. Siri will not activate, voice memos will not work, voice dictation appears then immediately disappears, and I cannot record videos. Also, all sound from the built in speakers becomes extremely quiet. Plugging in headphones with a mic doesn't fix anything; still can't record audio, sound is still too quiet. Making a phone call, everything works fine. They can hear me fine, I can hear them fine, even on speaker. So all the microphones and speakers are presumably working, they just aren't being properly recognized unless I make a call.

The problem will appear and disappear at random. Today it started happening consistently after every call I made, and would go away after a few minutes. I restarted the phone and it stopped happening. But it will come back like it has before.

    Hi DoctorBalanced,

Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.

It appears that the microphone(s) on your iPhone aren't working intermittently, and you can make calls consistently but  not use Siri or record voice memos. You can find some troubleshooting advice related to this situation in Get help with the microphones on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch which includes some of the steps you've mentioned. If you've tried all of the steps from this article (which I've quoted below), you may want to contact Apple Support for more help:

    iPhone

There is more than one microphone on your iPhone.

To test the primary microphone on the bottom of your iPhone, open Voice Memos and tap the record icon. Then speak into the microphone and tap the play icon to play back the recording. You should be able to hear your voice clearly.

If your voice sounds faint when you’re using the speakerphone on a phone call, make sure that your iPhone receiver isn’t blocked or covered.

If audio from video recordings sounds faint, or Siri can’t hear you, make sure that the microphone near the iSight camera—on the top, back corner of your iPhone—and the receiver isn’t blocked or covered.

If you still have issues after testing the microphone on your device, try these steps:

    1. Unplug any accessory plugged into the headset jack.
    2. Avoid blocking the microphone and iSight mic with your fingers while holding the device or recording video.
    3. Remove screen protectors, films, or cases that cover the microphone, iSight mic, or iPhone receiver.
    4. Clear any debris from the microphones or iPhone receiver. Refer to the user guide for your device on microphone locations.
    5. Restart your device.
    6. Make sure you have the latest version of iOS.

If you've tried these steps and people still can't hear you on phone or FaceTime calls or Siri doesn’t hear your requests, contact Apple Support.

    Best Regards.
