Hi Templeton,
I should have been more specific.
I meant Apple Software Update for Windows.
The reason I am asking is that when I try to use the update tool, I receive a message that "The Apple Software Update server could not be found. Check your Internet settings and try again."
It appears from this thread:
Apple Software Update - "Server could not be found"
that other users are having the same problem. This thread begins on March 15, 2016. I believe this might be the same day that version 2.2 was released.
Version 2.2 seems to have introduced a new problem, which is that it does not connect to the Apple Software Update server.
In a comment by owlyn, he or she recommends using the instructions from Apple:Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows 7 and later - Apple Support
But then owlyn recommends: "Then, do NOT take the offered 2.2 upgrade."
On this page, Apple security updates - Apple Support, there appears a table titled "Security Updates." The first row in the table shows "Apple Software Update 2.2", available for "Windows 7 and later", with a release date of "9 Mar 2016." A third-party site says they believe it was actually released on March 15.
When I click on the link in the table, I reach this page: About the security content of Apple Software Update 2.2 - Apple Support
That page then sends me to http://cve.mitre.org/about/
The CVE ID for this issue is CVE-2016-1731. Here is the page about Apple Software Update for Windows: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2016-1731
The Description reads: "Apple Software Update before 2.2 on Windows does not use HTTPS, which makes it easier for man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof updates by modifying the client-server data stream."
This matches what Kaspersky alerted me to this morning.
So installing version 2.2 is NOT the solution. My real question is, "When and where can I download the fix to the version 2.2 problem?"
As edfromwollaston points out, "The problem now is that if Apple issues a newer version to fix the problem, it seems that no-one with version 2.2 will ever be able to download it!"
Thanks for any information you can provide.
And can you remove the Solved checkmark? I think the problem is just beginning.
