Q: what video converter for macbook?

I'm looking for a video converter that converts primarily .mov files to either .avi or MP4, and that also allow editing the video. Does not really matter whether it's available in a single app or in two apps. Have tried several downloads, but they appear to be non-compatible, even though they claim to be. What is out there?
