Q: When I'm on the phone, people say I sound really distant and can't hear me but when I put them on loudspeaker they can hear me perfectly fine. Is it the microphone?

When I'm on the phone people tell me that I sound really distant and they cannot hear me. But when I put them on loudspeaker they can hear me perfectly fine! Is it the microphone that needs fixing? How much?

Do you have a case on the phone? Is it one designed for that particular model of the phone? It sounds like it is covering the microphone, or the secondary noise cancelling microphone. Try resetting the device. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The device will reboot. Check after this.

Yes, I have a case on my phone that is designed for the model. When I don't have a case on they can't hear me either. I think my microphone might need replacing as I've tried restarting all settings and the phone. Do you have an idea of how much it will cost me?

Did you try the steps in the support document that Ferd II provided? If so, then make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple Store. I believe for a microphone issue they may replace the device. Once Apple has examined the device, they will provide you with your options.

I had this problem today too and just figured out the problem. Thanks to the link provided here, I learned that speaker mode uses a different mic, leading me to examine the mic on the bottom. It was packed full of some substance (maybe dirt and grime from frequent use.) I cleaned it out carefully with a thumb tack and the issue is resolved.
