Q: Target Display Mode for Late 2015 iMac

I have a late 2015 21.5" iMac that I am trying to put into Target Display Mode for a Mid-2013 MacBook Air 13". Both have up to date software and a thunderbolt port. I've connected them and followed all of the instructions that I found here: Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support . Nothing is happening. No recognition whatsoever. Tried command F2 and command shift F2. Tried switching the cable to the other Thunderbolt port. Still nothing. Could the problem be with the port on the iMac?

As stated in that article:

Note: iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) and later iMac models can't be used as Target Display Mode displays.

If desired, set up Virtual Network Computing.

Unfortunately, I received conflicting advice at my local Apple store where I purchased the cable.

Go back to the Apple Store, tell them about that note, and if you don’t have any other use for the cable(you may be able to set up a network with it), ask for a refund.
