Q: Inline Microphone won't work on Windows 10

Good morning everybody,

I discovered a problem with my Bose headphones, which i use as a headset on my iMac late/end 2012.

When I use it on the Apple OS el Cap. everything is perfectly fine. Running on Windows 10, which i installed through the upgrade coming from windows 8.1, which i installed using BootCamp, i just can't get the inline microphone of the headset to work. The microphone is not listed as a source in the system, meaning, that it is not "detected".

So i figured, that i might be missing a driver. So i checked to see, whether the bootcamp version i am running is the latest.

Running the "apple software updater" didn't show anything besides an update for iCloud and iTunes - which i am both not using on windows.

This made me wonder so i checked the current version "manually". I noticed that the BootCamp version currently running is 4.1!

After checking on the official websites noticed that by now, my system should be running BootCamp version 6.

Believing that updating BootCamp would bring the missing drivers I downloaded the latest version able to be downloaded from here: 5.1.5769. -thinking that going from there, the software updater will maybe allow me to update to 6 as it should.

After expanding the .zip I tried to run the setup.exe as recommended, but it immediately failed, stating that i wasn't able to "run on this model".

Working on an iMac late 2012 it normally should... after seeking advice from several people with a similar problem trying to run the setup.exe I managed to start it despite of the programs first claim of not being able to. Now the installer told me, that "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable" - meaning the bootcamp.msi - and was asking for the directory. After opening the exact directory the bootcamp.msi was located in, it still would not run as hoped displaying the exact same error as before.

So, here i am after quiet some time, asking you Ladies and Gentlemen, for any advice. Coming from a simple microphone issue its quite a walk - Sorry

I hope you can help me update bootcamp to its latest version, which seems to be the most promising way to get the microphone working.

Best regards from Germany

Nic

    Hello there, nicolas Gon.

It sounds like you are not seeing some standard Mac features when using Windows on your iMac. The following Knowledge Base article provides some great insight and pointers for troubleshooting:

If you don‘t see some Mac features when using Windows on your Mac

Connect and format a USB flash drive

To download and install the latest Boot Camp drivers for Windows, you need an 8 GB or larger USB flash drive. It will be erased, so back up any of its data that you want to keep before continuing.

    1. Start your Mac from OS X. If you're currently started from Windows, click the Boot Camp icon in the system tray and select the option to restart from OS X.
    2. Connect the USB flash drive to your Mac.
    3. Open Disk Utility, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
    4. Select your USB flash drive from drives listed in the Disk Utility window.
Select the drive name, not the volume name that appears beneath it.
    5. Click the Erase button or tab.
    6. Choose MS-DOS (FAT) as the format.
    7. If you see a Scheme menu, choose Master Boot Record as the scheme.
    8. Click Erase to reformat the drive, then quit Disk Utility.

Download the support software for Windows 8.1 or later

    1. Make sure that your Mac is connected to the Internet.
    2. Open Boot Camp Assistant, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
    3. Deselect all options in the Boot Camp Assistant window, except the option to download the latest Windows support software from Apple. Then click continue.
If you don't see this option, choose Action > Download Windows Support Software from the menu bar.
    4. Make sure that your USB flash drive is shown as the destination drive. Then click Continue and enter an administrator name and password, if prompted. Boot Camp Assistant then downloads the Windows support software to that drive:

    Experiencing issues?

    • If the assistant doesn't see your USB flash drive, click Go Back and make sure that the drive is connected directly to the USB port on your Mac, not to a display, hub, or keyboard. Disconnect and reconnect the drive, then click Continue.
    • If the assistant says that your USB flash drive can't be used, make sure that it's formatted correctly.
    • If the assistant says that it can't download the software because of a network problem, make sure that your Mac is connected to the Internet.
    • If the assistant says that the Windows support software could not be saved to the selected drive, make sure that your USB flash drive has a storage capacity of at last 8 GB.

Download the support software for Windows 7 or earlier

    1. Download the appropriate version of Windows support software that works with your Mac and version of Windows.
    2. Double-click the downloaded ZIP file to expand it.
    3. Drag the contents of the ZIP file to your USB flash drive, then follow the steps in the next section to install the software.

Install the downloaded Windows support software

After the Windows support software has been downloaded or copied to your USB flash drive, quit Boot Camp Assistent, then follow these steps to install the sofware.

    1. Make sure that the USB flash drive is connected to your Mac.
    2. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Startup Disk, then select the Windows volume from the list of drives:
    3. Click Restart to start up your Mac in Windows, then log in, if prompted.
    4. Open the Boot Camp folder on the USB flash drive, then double-click Setup to begin installation. When you're prompted to allow Boot Camp to make changes, click Yes.
    5. Click Repair to reinstall or update the Windows support software installed by Boot Camp. If you get a warning that the software you're installing hasn't passed Windows Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
    6. After installation finishes, click Yes to restart your Mac.

If a Mac feature still doesn't work after updating the Windows support software, search for your symptom on the Apple support website or Microsoft support website. Some features of your Mac aren't designed to work in Windows.

Thanks for being a part of Apple Support Communities.
