I understand that i made a mistake in recording a recent wedding I shot. I shot all the videos in a M4V format. I can not find a way to edit this in FCP. What is a convenient and hopefully free way to get this video converted in a high quality format so i can get this edited??? I'm so lost! thank you.

Wait a second. I feel dumb. Yes, that set of videos i guess got ran through the "photos" app and got construed somewhere along those lines. so, i will just re upload the original files but unfortunately, the original MOV files are doing the same thing.

Assuming you imported the videos in some weird way (since a 5D Mk.III doesn't record in .m4v to begin with), you might have to convert them to ProRes 422 or .mov with Quicktime. Do you still have the original media on the memory card?

FCPX handles m4v without flaws - except 'commercial' ones, containing copyprotection...
What device were in use for recording, .... ?
As Karsten said, FCPX should handle the M4V format just fine. If possible, could you describe the device you were using, recording settings, and what happens when try to to import/edit within the program? And if you have to use a different program, I'd try iMovie first for kicks and giggles and maybe even find a copy of Adone Premiere Pro somewhere. Any other footage from FCPX can be transferred to Premiere super easily with XML files.
I was using a Canon 5D Mark III and my computer is an early 2014 MBP. This is the message i get when trying to import my videos into FCP.

That's interesting. The Mark iii records to mov container. Assume then that after recording your files were run through some converter software. Were they?

No they weren't. I guess whats why i'm so confused. they came straight out of the camera this way.
CCan you post one of these clips somewhere that it can be downloaded? Are you importing using the import window from the camera card?
I know this sounds stupid, but try renaming the ".MOV" to ".mov" without quotes of course. Sometimes the smallest things can make applications go whack
YYou do not open a file using FCP. FCP opens FCP libraries. You import the file using the import function.
I figured out the M4V problem. Now I'm just struggling because FCP won't read MOV as well.
