HI my son was just playing on the Mac and got a security warning about a virus on the computer. he was asked to download something that would fix it - allegedly from Apple - looked genuine enough but luckily he wasnt sure and closed everything down. Is this a scam or do Apple send you such warnings?

Yup as stated above its a scam, I would do a scan anyways with a trusted Anti-Virus/Malware scan to just be on the safe side.

I wouldn't. For one thing: there aren't any viruses for Mac out in the wild and second, there is no "trusted" AV software that I would let within 1,000 ft of any of my Macs. If there was adware/malware/popups installed, there are several ways to take care of them - none of them involve AV ware.

There is no such "virus" and whatever it wanted you to download is not from Apple. Those things are distributed by criminals attempting to defraud you.
