    You don't have to do anything.  When you open your iPhoto library with the new Photos app the existing library is migrated to a new Photos library.  However, as with any operation one should have a current backup before proceeding.

    I should have asked; Why does Apple warn me that all of the photos on my computer will be erased?

     

    I backed up my photos and made the upgrade.

    It won't - in fact it erases nothing - and the way you are sure you lose nothing is to always have a good backup - especially when you do an upgrade or conversion - with good backups you are protected - without good backups you are 100%  guaranteed to lose things
