Does Apple Backup backup IMPORTED photos from iOS 9 devices (iPad, iPhone)?

Only if you have the iCloud backup set - Apple does not bakcup any thing but does provide various tools for you to do it
On you phone settings ==> iCloud => Backup

No issue with how to do iCloud Back-up. The question was meant to distinguish between IMPORTED photos (via SD card adapter in this case) vs photos taken with the device camera. I called Apple Support and they said that any IMPORTED or other photos not in Photo Stream or iCloud Photo Library ARE backed up by Apple's iCloud Backup process. So, cased closed from my perspective!
