My Canon MP980 will not print in 10.11

I just bought two sets of very expensive cartridges for my Canon MP980 printer to print some important documents. Guess what? It will no longer print in El Capitan. It shows the document being sent to the printer and the arrows going across but nothing happens and nothing comes out. I can print a test page sent from the Utility setting of the driver, but no documents. I thought that if I tried the new Gutenprint drivers it might start to work but no luck!

Any ideas?

The last driver that Canon released for the MP980 was for OS X 10.9. I know this driver can be installed and work on 10.11 so here is a link to that driver. Given that you cannot get the Gutenprint driver to work as well then something may be amiss with the transport to the printer, whether that be via USB port, Ethernet or WiFi. Note the print you mention from the Canon utility is just a command sent to the printer - not an actual test print.

So before installing the driver I have linked to above, open Printers & Scanners and remove the MP980 printer. Then open Finder and from the Go menu, select Go to Folder. Then copy the following line below and paste that into the Go field and then press the Go button.

/Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter

Here you will see all the contents of the Canon BJPrinter folder. Select all the folders and trash them. Then restart the Mac. After you log back in, run the MP980 printer driver installer and when that has completed, add the printer. Now see if this works.
