Appearance of a Green Apple on a 2011 MacBook Pro during Startup

The other day my MacBook Pro that I purchased in 2011 made some very strange noises and also got very warm. The computer then shut down. Now when I attempt to boot up the computer a green apple appears on the screen and the progress bar is also green. The progress bar will make it about 50% of the way and then get hung up. Then the apple and progress bar will disappear and the screen becomes totally white with nothing on it. Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks.

- Try resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

About NVRAM and PRAM

- Try starting in Safe Mode

OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

- Boot to Recovery and repair the startup disk

OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

- If it is repairable reinstall the OSX

How to reinstall OS X on your Mac - Apple Support

- If you do not have a backup use disk utility to restore the internal disk to an external disk so you can try to recover data.

Then format the startup disk and do a fresh install of OSX

If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
