.3g2 video files cause QuickTime error?

I have an iBook G4 running QuickTime Pro 7.1.3.

I am trying to play some video files that were created on my phone, a Helio Hero. The video files have the extension '.3G2' and this format is listed as supported by QuickTime. The files even have a QuickTime icon when I look at them in the Finder. However, when I try to play these files in QuickTime I get this error:

"Error opening movie. The movie could not be opened"

And then nothing happens.

So, can anyone tell me what is going on here? Do I need to make some special setting in my phone before creating the video files? Is there an update or plugin I need? I just want to play these files on my Mac. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

I had an opportunity to try this on a PC while at work. I tried to open the .3g2 video file using QuickTime on a WindowsXP machine and the file still failed, but I got a different error message. Here is the message I get:

Error -2041: an invalid sample description was found in the movie

Any ideas how I can fix this?

Try playing in VLC or MPEG Streamclip. If neither work it is another oddball codec to add to the list of oddball codecs that won't play on anything other than the device they are intended for.

Thanks for the tip. I did try VLC and I was able to get the picture part of the video to play, but the audio generated a bunch of errors about an audio codec 'sqcp' not being supported. I'll try the other app next and see what happens.

I see that a lot in VLC that it throws up the error box as to uncompressing audio etc (especially where it was autored in Windows).

Really if you you are in a position where VLC is balking then for sure QT will keel over.

You have a ton of authors using freeware and pirateware making something that will play ( for them) then posting willy-nilly everywhere, vs. abiding by standards and the resultis this sort of mayhem.
