"HD full" message appearing on my screen when working a document

I keep getting a "HD full" message in a pop up window when working in Word documents. It pops up rather very often and is incredibly annoying. What can I do to free space? How do I do it? I am an almost 60 yr old humble computer and internet neophyte. Therefore, a tutorial or specific instructions will be highly appreciated.

Select your hard drive icon and then go to the menubar and select Get Info from the File menu. Looking down the list of items in the dialog that pops up you’ll see Capacity, Available, and Used. Capacity will indicate how much information your computer’s drive can store, Available will indicate how much is left, and Used will indicate how much space is in use. Apple suggests that your Available space should always be between 15GB and 20GB to allow for temporary files. How much available space do you have?
