Sorry the picture is pretty self explanatory, you need a sim card, you can't skip.

After you activate, you can remove the SIM card. Can you borrow one for activation only?

I have the same problem, but my phone doesn't recognise SIM cards and I´ve used it for 3 years without one and never needed it to update IOS. Now because I tried to update I think I´ve lost my phone. If anyone knows any way to bypass this, I would appreciate it!

A SIM is required to activate the phone. If the phone is carrier locked, it must be a SIM from the carrier it's locked to.

There is no way around this.

A friend of mine has the same problem.

He used at home his Iphone 5 without sim card. I told him to update to IOS 9.3. his phone is not activated.

All his important contacts are in the phone...

The question is, why apple could not write a warning message before the update starts that, update only with a freaking sim card in it???

I am sure many people has the same problem.

If there is a work around let us know.

There is no workaround. As has already been stated, this has been the case for nearly 9 years.

The question is: why would you use a phone without a SIM card?  A phone is intended to be used with a SIM card. So there is no need to "warn" anyone. People do not have a problem if they use the phone as it is intended to be used i.e. with a SIM card.

The "work around" is to get a SIM card in order to update the phone. It does not need to be an active one. And make sure, if the phone is carrier locked, that the SIM is from the carrier the phone is locked to.

Which means the phone is carrier locked and you are not using a SIM from the carrier it's locked to.

My phone doesn't recognise sim cards at all. the detector is broken. It has been for the past 3 years. I have updated with every other software update fine without the use of a SIM, and now that I have updated to 9.3 I cannot use my phone at all.

I would have liked a notice stating that I would need a SIM to be able to update my phone so I could make the decision not to update to 9.3.

But looks as though my phones at the end of its days now.

Then get it fixed. A SIM has ALWAYS been required to activate the iPhone.
