Problems with BT email following launch of El Capitan

I have just upgrade to El Capitan on my iMac and I have lost my ability to send/receive BT email. I have deleted the account and reloaded it but nothing works. Has anyone else had this problem and how was it resolved?

iMAC, Mac OS X (10.6)
