Two iMacs will not boot after the 10.11.4 update.

Sorted - Booted to another drive (10.8 with FCP) deleted SUIDGuardNG.kext from failed install, re-booted to 10.11 and the .4 install then installed. Many thanks to Martin Montgomery for the heads up!

I had the exact same problem. This solution sorted it for me too.

What are the ramifications of not having the kext file? Is it necessary?

Had the same problem. I've updated to 10.11.4, succeeded installing it, but during booting it would go to darkscreen/shutdown. Also couldn't enter Safe Mode, so I entered Recovery Mode (cmd+R during boot) to try repairing the HDD with Disk Utility, but errors occurred and couldn't fix it.

Fix:

1. Connected the mac through thunderbolt to another one in Target Disk Mode.

2. Used Disk Warrior to fix the partition.

3. It works!

I'm having the same issue (I think) but I do not have a SUIDGuardNG.kext file on the machine. 2011 iMac 27"

Tried Verbose boot to see what's going on, it finished verbose "booting" with no errors and proceeded to a white screen. Mouse was movable but the OS never loaded.

Tried booting into safe mode, no go.

Tried recovery, checked the disk, no errors.

Any other thoughts on what else it could be?

Thank you! That fixed it for me: renamed SUIDGuardNG.kext to SUIDGuardNG.kext.hld and rebooted.

The kernel panic prevented me from booting into Safe Mode, Recovery OS install gave the same problem - probably because it just reinstalled the version with the 10.11.4 update.

I had to boot into my bootable backup from a couple of months ago to access /Library/Extensions and make the change.

Hi Martin, thanks for that hint. For me it worked like charm while before I failed with various other solutions. I deleted the file SUIDGuardNG.kext, booted in safe mode and installed the 10.11.4 combo update in less than 10 minutes. Now everything running smoothly again and I am on 10.11.4. Whast was that file SUIDGuardNG.kext needed for in previous versions? Does somebody know? Thanks again, regards, Martin 😉

MacBook Pro updated OK but late 2013 27" iMac upgrade went sour. Had to restore to backup (thank you Super Duper). Internet Recovery was no go. Spent time with Apple Support, they recommended reverting to 10.11.3 and waiting for next update. First problem I have ever had with an OS update in 10 years.

OK, I found out myself what SUIDGuard was for originally. Actually it is even shown on developer's Github page that it should be deleted before upgrading OS X 10.10... https://github.com/sektioneins/SUIDGuard 😊

i'm in the same boat ... 2014 mac pro updated fine ... 2013 mac mini updated fine ... 2012 mbp retina update to 10.11.4 failed ... no SUID*.kext file exists on the MBP ... tried both combo update and updating via the app store ... both failed ... restored back to 10.11.3 3 times ... sticking on 10.11.3 as i don't have the time to figure out why the update is failing ...

Someone else pointed out that the DIsk Sensui/Trim Enabler extension resulted in similar behavior. I have found that the Cindori extensions did interfere with my system updates and the writer suggests disabling it, upgrading, then re-enabling. I think it makes sense to go through ALL your kexts in their various folders and remove anything that isn't Apple's or obviously needed (e.g. VMWare). Check the dates, too. I had some remarkably old Adobe rubbish sitting around.

I am not an expert but I would try disabling:

• Kapersky
• LogMeIn
• Parallels

Make sure XCode is up to date. I don't have klif on my system as far as I can tell.

If you can upgrade, get the LATEST versions and if you absolutely need them, reinstall.

Oh, and make sure you are set to always boot in verbose mode so you can watch what is happening. I was going to video the boot so I could find the error messages.
