Q: Help troubleshooting a MBP Kernel Panic/hardware issue??

I have a circa 2008 15" MacBook Pro that I appear to be having Kernel Panic issues with.  Perhaps hardware trouble, but I'm just trying to find someone who might be able to help me diagnose whats up.

Below is the story:

This MBP never has gotten heavy use, even when I was in school.  Pretty much has been babied.  No dings, dents, no coffee/tea accidents.  Perfect as a nearly 10 yr old computer can be.

Hardware changes:

5 yrs ago: maxed out RAM with Crucial memory.  No issues afterwords.

1 1/2 years ago: replaced HD with a Samsung Pro SSD (256gb).  No issues, except better battery life, and faster booting/shutdown.

These updates done by myself.

Software changes:

Nothing unusual.  I'm not a power user.  I've used Office for Mac for years.  Nothing else, really....

I've done OS updates through the years, including the most current OS when it became available.  All updates applied.

No other new software installed, recently.  My MBP was primarily a word processor, with a bit of Web surfing.

About a week ago, it started.  Computer sitting idle, and then the screen starts flashing/pixelating/breaking up.  Not using a program, just at the main, startup screen.  Then, it restarts...

I received the "your computer has restarted" message, along with the Report

If I can sign in, it begins again.  I'm literally just sitting here, watching it cycle, as above.

I was able to save the Kernel Panic report as a PDF,  but only the top half of the info saved.  I can't stop the computer from restarting, so, it's the best I seemingly can do.

The only thing I've tried, thinking it might be an OS issue of some kind, is to do a Clean Install of Yosemite.  At that point, I figured, what the heck.....

I was able to do the install, but, the cycle just started over again!!!  Seems to point the finger at hardware, possibly....

I reseated the Ram.  No joy.

I still have the old, functioning, original HD.  I have the original RAM.

I build my own PCs.  The screen flashing/breaking up reminds me alot of a video card issue.  Same sort of odd general behavior.  I could replace the SSD, with the original one.  I could just swap the RAM with the original RAM.

It could be my MBP is giving up the ghost, finally.  The Kernel Panic Report is just a partial.  Ive tried to capture the whole thing, but with no luck.  I would not know how to read it anyway.  I know, based on some posts I've read, that there might be some info that could point at a possible hardware issue that is just not evident to me.

I could take a short clip of the behavior, and post it, so everyone can see it.

Is there someone here who'd like to go through the process with me, and offer suggestions/advice?  At this point, I have noting to lose, and plenty of time on my hands.

I'm willing to give it a go, if someone wants to look over my shoulder, and lend me a hand.  Everything I do, I'll post here, in hopes it might help someone else.

Thanks,

Dave

This is the best I can do. Since my MBP keeps restarting, I cant keep it stable enough to let me copy the whole file.... You have a 2007 MacBook Pro (3.1) That uses 800 MHz memory but the panic report shows:

    4 GB, DDR2 SDRAM, 667 MHz

Sometimes slower memory works without problem and sometimes not.

    I would:

    - Reinstall original memory

    I still problem:

    - Try resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

    About NVRAM and PRAM

    - Try starting in Safe Mode

OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

    - Boot to Recovery and repair the startup disk

OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

    - If it is repairable reinstall the OSX

How to reinstall OS X on your Mac - Apple Support

    - If you do not have a backup use disk utility to restore the internal disk to an external disk so you can try to recover data.

Then format the startup disk and do a fresh install of OSX

    Sorry,

I was having difficulty with doing a copy and paste job for the Kernel Report.

The latest report was the final report, the most current, if you will, generated after the last manifestation of symptoms, as above in my 1st post.

At that point, I just pushed and held my power button, and put away my computer last night.

The behavior continued after I did a clean install of Yosemite last night..There were three panic reports generated.

It still leads me to believe it might be a hardware, but I just can't tell.

And, btw, I did swap out the RAM for the Original Ram, with no change in behavior.

    Thanks,

    Dave

Apple does not use Crucial memory so the "original" memory is not really the original memory.

    Run Apple hardware test:

Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support

You will need one of the original install disks

You can also get AHT here:

IT is not going to work with SMC and VRAM reset as every discussion suggest. It is the system boot service having issue. The machine was not properly shut down while it is in the middle of some process and the system management respond is not correctly function as far as I noticed.

DIsconnect the battery and leave it overnight or whatever you are not going to use. Then run ASD on it if you can get hold of one . It is the holy grail for Apple and if you can't find it PM me and I will send you the file.

THe RAM got nothing to do with the issue as it is mostly by the graphic card panic is what I notived. I used 1600MHz RAM on early 2011 13" MBP with some tweak and work. The system do not know what brand to use and as long as the latency is correct it will work.

I did not post any answer before but after so many discussions telling people about SMC/VRAM reset in every post I thought I have to get that reset will cure everything mentality.

    Good luck and keep posted.

This may sound completely odd, but, my MBP DID come with that Crucial memory installed.

I purchased my MBP directly for the Apple store.  I've never owned a laptop before this one, so, I had no laptop memory lying around.

I purchased a single stick of 4gb memory direct from Crucial, to upgrade to 6gb total.

No one was more surprised than me to find Crucial memory in place when I took the memory cover off.

I really didn't give it anymore thought after that, though...

I've probably run that memory upgrade combo since 2010, with no issue that I know of.

And now, magically, my MBP is acting as if NOTHING is wrong.

Again, I did a clean install w/ Yosemite, and it continued to have exactly the same behavior as before.  Screen wigs out, crash, restart, repeat.

I was barely able to get the Panic report as above.....

Now, it's acting as if there is no issue at all.  No screen flashing.  No restarts.  No error messages on the screen.  I have literally done nothing different from the other day....

    It's kind of maddening....

    Ideas?

I was repairing Mac foe a while and sometimes the machine acted like there is no way to repair even replaced the SMC, PCH or other power management chips and components. After a while out of no where it started normal and we have no clue what makes it get going or what magic happened.

Forget about the RAM as the machine will work with any brand of RAM as long as it is CL9-CL11 and frequency is correct. You cannot use 1600MHz for sure and no matter what company or brand or country it is made the RAM is just to store data while it is in process.

Apple does not make their own component and I haven't seen any part in the Mac that is made by Apple. Every component and parts are manufactured by others and Apple designed the hardware under its brand. Thats all.

    Congrats for the machine.

Im leaning still towards hardware/video issues

I have been unable to use hardware test, using the methods described.

Perhaps because I have a Clean Install of Yosemite

Im going to drag out my orig install discs, and see if I have any luck

So, this may not be highly scientific, or even help with troubleshooting, but, here's what I did:

I used my original install discs, and reinstalled my original OS.

Ran for awhile, did some assorted tasks, and was unable to reproduce the problems at all....

Did the same thing, using my disc for Snow Leopard.  No trouble at all...

Did a clean install on each of the later versions of  OS X (Mountain Lion, Mavericks and Yosemite)

STILL no sign of the trouble at all.

So, I went from a computer that was basically unusable and unpredictable, to one that seems, on the outside anyway, to be completely stable.

I now have El Capitan running, also a clean install, with all updates.

Ive done everything I typically do on that computer, and more.  I've tried to get it to fail.  I've tried to make the Kernel Panic repeat itself.  ZERO sign of any trouble.

In thinking back, I could not link the initial issue to any change I made to hardware or software.  It's conceivable that I'm at the beginning of a hardware failure that's coming, yet, I cant make sense enough of the report to know where to look.  Perhaps my MBP is just getting ready to give up the ghost.  I just dont know....

I also cannot link, directly anyway, my trouble to software issues.  I wasn't really running much in the way of other software, in addition to the OS.  At each of the above steps, I did also reinstall the other software as well, just to try to keep it as consistent as possible.

Now it feels like I have a MBP I can't trust to do anything important.  Not without reason....

Any further suggestions?  Any help would be appreciated......

    Dave
