No. I want you to follow all of the steps above this section and then this section:

If you have some other printing issue

These steps may resolve printing issues that have no other clear cause:

  1. Open the Printers & Scanners pane of System Preferences, then select your printer and click the minus sign ➖ to remove the printer from the list.
  2. Follow the steps in the previous section to add your printer.
  3. If the issue persists, reset the printing system, then follow the steps in the previous section once more.

If the issue remains unresolved, take these final steps to move aside any currently installed printer drivers:

  1. Reset the printing system again.
  2. Rename the folder at /Library/Printers:
    • From the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder. Then type
      /Library
      and click Go.
    • Click once on the Printer folder to select it, then press Return to begin renaming the folder. Type
      Printers-old
, then press Return to save the new name.
  3. Follow the steps in the previous section once more.

Thank you, yes I am extremely pleased to say it worked.

Firstly I updated El Capitan.

I disconnected the usb lead from the printer.

I restarted the iMac (after installation). Reconnected the printer. This time everything seemed to work. It was the procedure that seemed to be key. I cannot recall exactly what i was doing previously and why it hadn't worked, but I suspect the updating of OS 10.11.3 to the latest version 10.11.4 was pivotal.

Thank you for your assistance (and I am pleased if my experience and the support I received to understand fully the help menu might go on to help others, since I discovered hundred of users had had similar printer problems to me).

I previously had same issue with 10.11.3 which was resolved by updating OS to 10.11.4.

However I have the same issue occurring again, but I have the latest El Capitan version 10.11.5

Now my Canon LBP7660CDN isn't recognised. DO I have to wait till Apple support updates El Capitan to incorporate my Canon printer (this would render it useless in the meantime)?

Thanks

There are two drivers that support the Canon LBP7660CDN and both of them work fine on 10.11.5. And upgrading from 10.11.4 should not have stopped either driver from working.

So when you say that it isn't recognised, do you mean that when you select to print, an error occurs stating that the printer is not connected? If yes, is it still connected via USB?

If you mean something else, then can you describe your issue in more detail please.
