updating ipad A1430 64GB with 6.0.1 software to 9.3

My ipad model MD368B with software 6.0.1 wont update to software 9.3. The software is already downloaded, the ipad plugged and reset to factory settings with 55gb available free space. On trying to update the software, which i need to do after years of lack of use to download most apps, i get a message 'Unable to install update. An error occurred installing iOS9.3 - close/settings'. it seems to suggest that there's no memory for this update when the system says there is plenty.

please help.
