Safari won't open any links and then freezes/crashes

HELP! The Safari on my fairly new iphone 6s has gone haywire. Safari opens fine, and if you type in a direct URL, it will go to the website just fine. However, if i attempt to search any subject it will pull up the pages of websites, but will not allow me to connect to any of the links and when I select a link it then freezes and crashes safari. Additionally, if i try to open any weblink imbedded in an email, it again freezes and crashes both mail AND Safari. SO FUN!

And just to test general connectivity and function, i downloaded Google Chrome to see if I can search and connect there, and I can. The search works fine, pulls up the pages, and strangely, I can't access the pages direct, but it will allow me to open the page in another tab. I feel like this should be a clue for someone smarter than I. 😝

I have been tinkering for about an hour with it and I am at a loss.

Things I have tried:

1. Resetting the phone - both just by powering off and a hard reset (Power + Home)

2. Turning off Safari Suggestions (and browser suggestions) - this was a fix that I found for a bug that seemed similar from earlier this year.

3. Changing the search engine from Google to Yahoo and back, nothing.

4. Private Browsing (again a "fix" I found on the interwebs...)

5. Downloading and upgrading my iOS to 9.3. Still nothing.

6. Banging my head on my computer and cursing very loudly at the phone.

PLEASE, if you have any suggestions, i am all ears... I am going bananas and can't let it go.

THANK YOU!!!

First thing a human should do after receiving an iPhone or iPad is download Google Chrome then download Google Maps then download Gmail and possibly download Google+ if you have a business.

Google Chrome is the best web browser in the world plain and simple. Sure you could use Safari or Firefox or Opera or IE or Egde But why waste time when you have a gem available to you with the push of a couple buttons.

Safari is a joke made by Apple so they can say they have a browser on their devices when you purchase them.

Firefox is a nonprofit group that has no money

Anything made by Microsoft is worse then Apple

Opera is so old but kinda funny in my opinion. I would actually recommend Opera just because most people have never heard of it and it's only used by about 1% of the worlds devices.

Put it this way, I bet you've seen a google car driving around at some point in your life. I have seen quite a few of them loaded up with cameras and gadgets. What's my point? Google has a lot of money and they usually spend it in the right places like having Chrome up to date with all coding and new stuff.

I think Safari is a disgusting browser. When I look at the news widget on my iPhone and click on a story to read it opens a new window everytime which is a pain in the azz. I have to close a bizzillion windows weekly just from reading some news articles. Great work Safari team.

Any unbiased web developer would most likely recommend using Chrome.

I too have the problem that links in Safari no longer work after iOS9.3 update. 😠

It's so good that people make suggestions like 'disable Javascript', but really this is not a solution. Half of the sites you visit will probably not work properly.

Suggestions like 'Use Chrome/Firefox' are also just a distraction - they are using the same underlying browser. So although (for example) Chrome will allow you to more easily open links in a new tab, this also isn't a solution. Clicking on links after searching simply will not work.

And of course then we get the 'Restore/Reinstall' iOS9.3. Really? This is rather akin to replacing the engine in your car every time you run out of gas. And worse still: It won't solve anything. This is a new bug, introduced by Apple engineers in the release, and it is almost incomprehensible that the engineering team didn't spot it as part of their QA. I do hope that instead of enjoying a great Easter break, that they are slaving way on iOS 9.3.1. With fixes. Producing poorly controlled OS releases (thank heavens I have not yet tried to update any of my 'older' iOS devices) damages the reputation of Apple, and turns fairly expensive digital devices into shiny coasters. If - like me - you use your iPhone / iPad extensively as browser, Apple has simply made it useless. It needs fixing, and fast.

No: my post doesn't provide a solution. Only one organization can do that: The Apple engineering team. Get to it.

Struggling with the same issue since yesterday On IPad pro. Apple support couldn't solve it neither announce an update. Add to that an old Iphone that got stuck with the same upgrade...

Back to IPad2. thanks Apple. Since the beginning of the year, after 6 macs 9 iPhones 3IPods and 2 IPads plus all the "cheap" stuff added on, thinking of some other brands for all the family...

HI,

iv had the same issue and have found that it is an issue with iOS 9.3. There's a workaround however that worked for me which i found:

Go to settings....safari...scroll down to the bottom to advanced....then turn off JavaScript.

Reboot the handset and should work for the time being. Obviously sites don't look as nice but at least it works for the minute while another update is released.

HOpe this helps

I've been reading this thread and some related threads, and I have another workaround to try. Please note that I have not experienced the issue myself, so this is purely speculative, and feel free to ignore this post. 🙂

Data:

  • Folks who perform a full restore report the issue being fixed for a while, but then the issue returns.
  • Not everyone is experiencing this issue.
  • Some folks have one device that experiences the issue, and another device that does not.
  • At least one user reported removing the Wikipedia app, then rebooting, solved the issue for them.

Hypothesis: The more apps that are installed on a device, the more likely you are to encounter this issue. If the folks who did a full restore had a large number of applications, the apps would not all be restored immediately after the final reboot in the restore sequence, so the issue would not reproduce initially. However, after all (or most) apps are done restoring, the issue may return due to the large number of applications present.

Question: Does everyone experiencing the issue think they have a relatively large number of applications installed? (I don't know of a menu in Settings that tells you exactly how many apps are installed. Does iTunes give this information if you sync to a PC or Mac?)

Experiment:

  1. Try deleting apps that you don't use anymore. (NOTE: Deleting apps will also delete their settings, so if you re-install later, none of your preferences for that app will be saved.) To delete applications, press-and-hold on an app on the Home Screen until it starts to jiggle, then tap the "X" in the upper left-hand corner of the app icon.
  2. Power off/power on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch by holding the Power button until the slider appears, then swipe the slider. Wait for the spinning gear to disappear, then hold the Power button again until this screen turns on with the Apple logo.
  3. Check to see if the issue still occurs.

Notes: If removing apps does fix the issue for some folks, the number of apps required to reproduce the issue may vary by type of device, or even the set of apps installed, so it may be difficult to figure out an exact threshold of apps installed to workaround the issue.

Hope this helps!

After 2 hours at the Genius bar, 2 full reset and restores (which did not resolve the issue) and 3 layers of escalation later, the last recommendation was to do a full reset and SET UP THE DEVICE AS NEW. This is not a fix, this is a "we don't know what's wrong and don't want to look into it so just start over with a new phone." They maintain there is nothing wrong with IOS 9.3 but instead, encryptions may have gotten screwed up during the install if updated over "spotty wifi." Apparently you cannot restore to a previous version that was backed up AFTER the 9.3 update because whatever got screwed up was most likely also backed up. Sadly, I was sent home with a completely wiped phone running 9.3 (which seemed to fix the issue) but had to manually restore the phone.

I tested restoring to the earliest backup I had in my phone which was right after the 9.3 update and my phone worked for a few hours before safari started crashing again. Unfortunately I don't have a backup PRIOR to the update or else I'd try that to see if it would fix the phone altogether. May be worth trying though for those who can locate an earlier backup.

I can't believe no-one from Apple has looked into the issue. Very fraustrating.

I have had the same problem with links in email etc. The screen freezes and the only way back is to double click the home button and swipe up to close the email. Have tried rebooting to no avai. this needs iOS update ASAP as the issue has only occurred since upgrade to 9.3. All the suggestions so far appear to be temporary fixes. SO APPLE SORT THIS OUT NOW.
