Q: Safari won't open any links and then freezes/crashes

HELP! The Safari on my fairly new iphone 6s has gone haywire.  Safari opens fine, and if you type in a direct URL, it will go to the website just fine.  However, if i attempt to search any subject it will pull up the pages of websites, but will not allow me to connect to any of the links and when I select a link it then freezes and crashes safari.   Additionally, if i try to open any weblink imbedded in an email, it again freezes and crashes both mail AND Safari. SO FUN!

And just to test general connectivity and function, i downloaded Google Chrome to see if I can search and connect there, and I can. The search works fine, pulls up the pages, and strangely, I can't access the pages direct, but it will allow me to open the page in another tab.  I feel like this should be a clue for someone smarter than I.

I have been tinkering for about an hour with it and I am at a loss.

Things I have tried:

1. Resetting the phone - both just by powering off and a hard reset (Power + Home)

2. Turning off Safari Suggestions (and browser suggestions) - this was a fix that I found for a bug that seemed similar from earlier this year.

3. Changing the search engine from Google to Yahoo and back, nothing.

4. Private Browsing (again a "fix" I found on the interwebs...)

5. Downloading and upgrading my iOS to 9.3. Still nothing.

6. Banging my head on my computer and cursing very loudly at the phone.

PLEASE, if you have any suggestions, i am all ears... I am going bananas and can't let it go.

THANK YOU!!!

after some felt onehundred resets and recovers I have a system again with no problems.

I found an iCloud backup from thursday afternoon, that I put over the factory reset and now all is normal again, as if nothing had happened.

Luck maybe, hope it lasts for some time.

It seems this hint work. It seems the performance of the iPhone6 is a little bit laggy, but better than before.

Hey Apple pro's what do you done with the system?  9.0.2 the same problems...links in safari, or another browser don't work! Please go on to give us users a solution!

I already had this issue starting 2~3(?) days ago, when I was still on iOS 9.2.1.

It started after I was opening an Kickstarter.com link in Safari. It tried to open the app through Safari but then crashed. I also tried to find the same product page inside the Kickstarter App. I think it uses an internal app webbrowser. The app crashed.

Since then I had the problem of links on Google/etc (links to external websites, not currently where you're at) not working. Not even in the Chrome app. I upgraded to iOS 9.3 this morning to try to fix this, but to no avail.

What worries me most is that this issue happened BEFORE I upgraded.. Which means that something changed on my phone between now and a few days back. Logical possibilities:

    • Some Appstore/App update(s) causing the problem
    • Apple updates some things in the background on your phone, without a full iOS update, causing the problem

I spoke with a customer service rep, who said they are aware of the problem.  It would be nice if someone from Apple would chime in here on this question.

Unfortunately the link to Google doesn't apply for me. I'm still on 9.2.1 and do not allow my apps to update automatically. So Google Maps as the culprit is out. I suspect it was something that Apple pushed out as it started to happen literally 5-10 mminutes before I got a notice to update to 9.3.

As the gal who started this thread, I just wanted to say your response has amused me... Very well reasoned and asking the folks with half-*** suggestions to just stop... I still haven't fixed my phone. I am not going to wipe it and start as new until i am 100% certain Apple is just going to continue to ignore us.

In the meantime, keep on keeping on!

So now that you've been running your phone all day without Google Maps, is it still working? I'm struggling with the idea that it's Google Maps b/c my corruption started days before the 9.3 update AND the Google Maps update, but i am interested to see if you are still up and running??

Does anyone at Apple ever chime in on these discussion threads, or are we left to hypothesize and flounder in frustration on our own??  That does seem like pretty sorry customer service... it is on their site and all... I'm sure they pay attention if you use bad language, but god forbid they actually chime in and say they acknowledge the problem and are working on it... SOMETHING... but noooo... just us chickens, and some really smart people who are trying to figure it out, but i don't see any concrete solutions yet other than to reset to New and I am not going to do that yet.

So many of my friends have told me to go to the apple store or call, and i just can't bother to waste my time after reading all these replies.  It's clear they're clueless, as "resetting to New" is NOT a solution, it's a cop out.  But hey, keep the replies coming, maybe if we pile up ENOUGH users with the same problem we'll get someone to acknowledge us! Or we can start a support group.

I have iPhone 5 with iOS 9.3 and no problem with it, not yet at least. iPad 2 and iPad Air with iOS 9.2.1 both have this problem. So maybe installing 9.3 is a solution?
