Q: Safari won't open any links and then freezes/crashes

HELP! The Safari on my fairly new iphone 6s has gone haywire.  Safari opens fine, and if you type in a direct URL, it will go to the website just fine.  However, if i attempt to search any subject it will pull up the pages of websites, but will not allow me to connect to any of the links and when I select a link it then freezes and crashes safari.   Additionally, if i try to open any weblink imbedded in an email, it again freezes and crashes both mail AND Safari. SO FUN!

 

And just to test general connectivity and function, i downloaded Google Chrome to see if I can search and connect there, and I can. The search works fine, pulls up the pages, and strangely, I can't access the pages direct, but it will allow me to open the page in another tab.  I feel like this should be a clue for someone smarter than I.

 

I have been tinkering for about an hour with it and I am at a loss.

 

Things I have tried:

1. Resetting the phone - both just by powering off and a hard reset (Power + Home)

2. Turning off Safari Suggestions (and browser suggestions) - this was a fix that I found for a bug that seemed similar from earlier this year.

3. Changing the search engine from Google to Yahoo and back, nothing.

4. Private Browsing (again a "fix" I found on the interwebs...)

5. Downloading and upgrading my iOS to 9.3. Still nothing.

6. Banging my head on my computer and cursing very loudly at the phone.

 

PLEASE, if you have any suggestions, i am all ears... I am going bananas and can't let it go.

    I had no issue with safari till I updated. Mail freezes, Instagram links don't work. , can't reply to Ebay messages.

    As noted by few others, Apple engineers are fully aware of the current problems, as cited by many in the Apple Support Community, and are working on the update to be issued in next few days. I’m also suffering with my iPhone 6 Plus with the same issue. Like Derek, I had also chatted with Apple.com tech yesterday and she indicated they're fully aware of the issue with the hyperlinks after the iOS 9.3 update and working on a permanent fix for this at this time. On my query about satisfactory beta testing before release of a software update, she answered when customers are running the betas, if issues are not reported, Apple are not made aware of the problems. Apple engineers can test to the best of their ability, until all applications update, which many don’t until the official update rolls out; thus its possible Apple can’t always know about issues that are to come following the issue of the update, Also it isn’t affecting all customers, all types of email, or all areas. iPhone 5 used my daughter doesn’t have the hyperlink problem that I’m experiencing with my iPhone 6 Plus. Where it is an intermittent issue(s) it is also little harder to detect. Being a technical person, I believe this is a rational explanation by Apple. In response to someone’s suggestion about switching to Samsung notebook, I would say I personally believe the class of Apple’s iPhone or iPad along with their iOS software, available Apps etc. are of far higher quality and standard compared to any other smartphones available in the market. So that switching option is a no no. I am using iPhones (and iPad) since the time those were first introduced by Apple, and never considered going back to any other brand of smartphone. I am willing to wait a few more days for the update which Apple is working on.

    Nice to see you have so much faith in Apple. Your post appears to be founded on your comment:

    Yet a quick search on the Internet (yes, I know that this is difficult if you are a victim like myself of this issue), will quickly illustrate that Apple *was* made aware of these issues. Check out:

    I would love to defend Apple. I'm an ex-employee. A shareholder even. I just think that what many people here are asking for is an honest admission that there are problems with the release, and an indication of when a fix can be expected. Despite the attempts of some to dismiss it, this is a serious problem. It downgrades the usefulness of the iPhone to a degree that users can quite rightly suggest moving to an alternative platform: one that works. People are losing many hours doing complete restores, only to find the issue returning. We can of course blame Booking.com and others. Handy to have a scapegoat, but it would be just nice if Apple is open with their clients. Or do they really prefer to take the Volkswagen approach: "What their customers don't know won't hurt them?". That worked well. And yes, I've seen the comments on this board such as "I spoke to a guy who knows a guy who works at iOS chat/support whatever that says - Apple are working on it. #1 priority". But does that mean very much? An opinion of a random voice on a phone or on a chat line. I know a guy down the chip shop who swears he's Elvis (to quote a very old song), but it doesn't make it true.

     

    Go on Apple. Try harder. Think Different (to quote an even older Apple slogan) - and ending once more with an ancient song: "Keep the customer satisfied". After all - they pay for your shiny offices

     

    I've enjoyed this discussion board.... even seen potential romances bloom… but Apple is silent. Cue another Simon & Garfunkel number, but I don't want to show my age. Have a nice day everyone

    HI yes much the same for me..I realise we all have to wait for Apple to sort it but when they don't say anything it does make you lose faith in them. I downloaded a goggle ap and use that it works ok . And fortunately I still use an older I phone 4s lol. And so can access my emails and it all works as normal on the old phone

    switch off : open new tab Background

    show favorites bar

    show tab bar

     

    then look in your reserve copy

    delete boocking.com

     

    Works fine now compared whit good working iPad.

    Irritating that Apple persists its policy of NEVER replying to questions on ASC. This is a HUGE problem and one must ask how an app can take down the OS (more or less)? Embarrassing...

    This may have been posted earlier but I don't have the time to look through the full thread, my apologizes.

     

    I was able to open links once I changed my default search engine to Bing in Safari settings.  I haven't tried Yahoo or DuckDuckGo as alternative options, because Bing is working.

     

    I have a iPhone 6, and the issues started for me on Sunday 27March.  I upgraded to 9.3 thinking that would solve it, but issue remained the same, until I tried the temp fix with Search Engine settings.

     

    Not sure if this fixes links in other apps.

    I posted back on page 1 and have been following the thread via my email notifications for the past few days, hoping for a breakthrough solution or news of an update.

     

    A few things, from my personal experience, that may be relevant:

    • This behavior started for me on both my iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S immediately after updating to iOS 9.3. Did not experience the issue prior to that, but I'm not sure if I had been on 9.2 or 9.2.1 (I usually update right away so I'm pretty sure it was 9.2.1)
    • I do not now have, nor have I ever had, Booking.com installed on any of my iPhones or iOS devices since my first iPhone (v1) almost a decade ago. It has never been part of my iOS environment so I can categorically confirm that the "scapegoat app" is completely unrelated to this problem.
    • As others mentioned the problem manifests in Mail, Safari, Outlook, Chrome (but allows Open in New Tab with a long press). However, as I just learned, I have no problem clicking through email links if I use the GMail app!
    • Switching the default search engine to Bing in Safari allows me to click through on search results!

     

    I hope some of that is interesting or helpful to someone. Looking forward to a legitimate fix from Apple soon.

    same goes for me. links dont work in messages either. i did not do a software update to the ipad and its still happening so its not just upgrade issue. happening to my iphone 6 as well.

    IN response to cmorey from a few days ago, I have found the same to be true. Everyone seems to be getting excited about indie problem being caused by the 9.3 upgrade, but I had the problem from before that. In fact I only installed 9.3 in an attempt to solve he problem. For Apple to suggest this is due to a faulty download due to spotty wi-if is nonsense also, as like cmorey this just started happening on my iPads, and I had not performed any upgrades or changes for several months. As ever, these days Apple seem to try to obfuscate their way out of problems rather. Admit a problem, then some time after will drop a fix into a planned release and hope nobody noticed!

     

    i Am truly getting fed up with Apple, and despite having owned many devices and macs over the years I am now getting to the point where  may well be defecting back to Windows and over to Samsung, as I no longer feel we get the premium product that Apple claims we get for our money. I have a similar problem with Mail on my Mac and despite hours on with Apple support they cannot fix it, and again are saying I have to do a complete re-build of my machine and reinstall the OS.

    Thank you!  This is a very helpful summary.    I must add, though, that I am still on 9.2.1 and I have the same issue!
