I found my solution! GO to System Preferences > Display > click on Scaled. It will show you the choices below. I clicked on the Larger Text and tried that. The text was a little too big, but the middle one to the left of "Default" is perfect for me. Now Mail is tons easier to read, on top of everything in Safari. I LOVE it!
Many thanks to BABOWA.

I'm with ya. Had cataract surgery, will need more, and the thin, IMHO trendy, typeface they've chosen is really for under 40 eyes.
The ability to even bold the System font would be so appreciated.
There are third party apps that can change system fonts, and I've seen posts claiming success, but I'm too much of a purist to try them.
These (to us) faint typefaces make it very painful to be here. I just hope they will realize that our needs need to to be met, as well.
I imported Fira Sans typeface, which is possible, and it did help. I am in my 30s but have the same problem. (vision problems early do run in my family..) but it does involve a little work. You can find tutorials on the the internet and it is easy.
I have a mid-2010 MacBook, and I don't have those options. When I click on "Scaled," I just get three resolution choices, so if shutterbox's computer isn't that much younger than mine, I don't think he/she will have those options either.
