I cannot activate iPhone after updating IOS because my apple ID was set up to my old work email which is not active anymore. after a few tries now says email address is invalid

You need to remove iPhone from the list of devices if you no longer use certain e-mail to avoid further issues.

It is not between my list of devices, only my ipad is there if I sign in with my new email address and go to the Find my iPhone page. The phone was linked to an old email when it was set up in the beginning, which is not active anymore.
If you are planning to change your mail or no longer use it always remove your phone from the list of devices under that Apple id to avoid further issues.
