Q: Download photos from iCloud to iPhone.

Hi,

I have looked around everywhere but cannot seem to find a solution.

Here is my problem.

I had an old iPhone 5 with limited storage (16 Gig). hence I had the option "Optimise iPhone Storage' option enabled in iCloud->Photos settings.

However, now I have upgraded to iPhone 6s Plus with 128Gig and it can accommodate all the photos in their full resolution on the phone it self. So I want to download them to my device.

Is there anyway to do it? If I try to turn off 'iCloud photo library' It says there are x number of photos which are not downloaded in its full resolution and it will be deleted. How do I download them to my device before deleting?

Help appreciated.

Thanks,

Sarthak

    Hi Sarthak83,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities! I'm sure we can help you out with your question. You may want to make sure you have selected Download Originals, as noted in the following article:

Can I use iCloud Photo Library to save space on my device?

iCloud Photo Library automatically keeps all your photos and videos in the original, high-resolution version. Follow these steps to choose how you store your photos and videos on your device:

    • On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera, then select a storage setting.
    • On your Mac, click Photos > Preferences > iCloud, then select a storage setting.

If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. All of your original, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud while device-size versions are kept on your device. You can download the original photos and videos over Wi-Fi or cellular when you need them.

If you turn on Download Originals, iCloud Photo Library will keep your original, full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and on your device. Download Originals is the default setting for iOS devices with the free 5 GB storage plan and for all Mac devices.

How do I turn off iCloud Photo Library on just one device?

You can turn off iCloud Photo Library on a single device when you follow these steps:

    • On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > iCloud > Photos and turn off iCloud Photo Library.
    • On your Mac, go to System Preferences > iCloud > Options next to Photos, then deselect iCloud Photo Library.
    • On your Apple TV (4th generation), go to Settings > Accounts > iCloud and under Photos press Select to turn off iCloud Photo Library.

If you have Optimize Storage turned on, you might not have all of your original photos and videos on your device. To download the original photos and videos on your iOS device, go to Settings > iCloud > Photos and select Download and Keep Originals. On your Mac, open Photos, choose Photos > Preferences, then select Download Originals to this Mac. Then you can turn iCloud Photo Library off. You can also select the photos and videos that you want to download from iCloud.com.
